People Talk

America knew that people would talk about them. At times he felt that every moment they were together, there were whispers or stares. People always wanted to know how they could look each other in the eye after what they had done. How could they go back to trusting each other?

It had taken many years, and tons of patience. It took compassion to hold each other through the night terrors that were results of their actions. It was with soft touches and words that they rebuilt their love. They had loved each other before, and war couldn’t stop it.

Soldiers

Sometimes, he would wake up, jolting out of bed, fear flooding him as the tide drowned the shore. Cold sweat poured off his body, as scenes of the war passed behind his eyes. He whispered to himself those moments were in the past, it wasn’t happening anymore.

He recoiled from his lover’s touch, but the slim hands would continue to soothe him. The smaller man would rest his head on his shoulder, whispering apologies. America would take a deep breath, wrapping his larger body over the other’s, touching him gently back, kissing him.

“Don’t Japan, I’ve forgiven you for this.”

Greater Tragedies

Sometimes they would admit to sweeping the past under the rug. Other times they would stand together and acknowledge the tragedies they suffered at the hands of the other. In those moments they would hold each other and wipe each other’s tears, whispering apologies and learning to forgive. They would speak with their bodies, letting each other explain, wordlessly, how much he loved the other. Making up for the time they spent apart, for the years they were not allowed to look at each other or desire the other’s company. They had waited, hoping that time would heal all wounds.

He Disagrees

At times, when they were just being themselves, the disagreements were not on so grand a scale. There would be petty fights over whether Japanese cars or American cars were better. It was Sony Playstation vs. Microsoft Xbox. Or Japanese anime or American cartoons (neither of them could win that one, since each had their own charms).

Many times it would end in a match over Mario Kart or an epic game of some kind of ninja game, which would often end with the winner getting to call the shots that night. Neither minded losing when that was the reward.

It Was Just for Fun

“Dude, I said I was sorry!” America said, although the laughter in his voice belied his apology. Japan glared at him, dripping wet from his fall into the pond. America hadn’t meant to to knock him in there, this time a pure accident. He held out a hand to help the Asian out of the water. Japan grabbed it, yanking him in after him. America came up sputtering, looking at the slim man in surprise. Japan kissed him before he could say anything in protest.

“I forgive you, America-san.” They smiled at each other, enjoying the moment of bliss.
