“England! You’ve gotta come try it, it’s like the most amazing thing ever! The man who invented it says that it’ll cure all ills! It’s delicious, c’mon please!” pleaded America, giving England the face the he could never resist. He sighed in resignation, and the American whooped, excited that he would get to show England his newest invention. Sometimes things still felt strained between them, but there were so many joint enterprises going on between their peoples that he couldn’t help but visit his former charge. He shook his head at the thought, that had been more than a hundred years ago, it was 1888, he had hoped he’d be over it by now. Sometimes he would get a flash of a blue coat and it would take him back to that battlefield, where his world had changed forever. He walked deep in thought, eyebrows furrowed, as America led him to wherever it was that he had been on about.
It was a muggy summer day in Georgia and more than once England had found himself flicking a mosquito off his sleeve. He sometimes wished that short sleeves would come into fashion again, but for now he was not so lucky. He sweat in silence, listening to America’s boisterous voice offer a ‘hello’ here or a ‘how y’all doing?’ to the various passersby. They smiled amiably at him and went about their business. It wasn’t long until they came to a small shop.
“A soda fountain?” He was familiar with them, they had been invented in Europe not that long ago, however, they had grown in popularity in the United States. America ushered him inside to the counter.
“Two Coca-colas please!” he asked, grinning all the while. Several other people were around, drinking a dark, bubbling drink. He wondered exactly what this Coca-cola was. The clerk had gone over to the soda fountain and poured them each a glass. America paid him, a nickel for each. He handed England his, “Go ahead!”
England looked at the drink incredulously and then back to America. He quirked an eyebrow at him, America was positively quivering with anticipation to see his reaction. Bottoms up, he thought to himself, wondering what exactly this concoction was. The cool drink hit is tongue and he was surprised. It was like nothing he had ever tasted before, it was a completely new flavor.
“Do you like it?”
“It’s quite interesting,” America’s smile dropped a little of its brightness, “That’s not to say I don’t like it, I just think it’ll take sometime to get used to.” He could tell that this drink was going to be something, it certainly seemed popular enough already as he glanced around the small shop that was littered with posters identifying the beverage as the authentic Coca-cola. America grinned and drank his. England smiled inwardly at his companion’s enthusiasm for something as simple as a soda water.
“After this we can go and find some street vendors, and get some food fast!”
A century had passed and England still felt surprised at times by the still popularity of Coca-cola. It had its competitors sure, but there was still something very all-American about that red and white label of the sugary soft drink. Of course he would tease America about how the stuff could be used to clean a car engine, but he always found himself ordering it when he was missing the American. It tasted like him, and he loved it.
Even if they were sitting in McDonald’s and he watched America eat enough food to feed a family of humans, he would sip at the drink and remember a simpler time, when it wasn’t as important to get where you were going efficiently. When the soda didn’t come premixed, someone made it for you. Coca-cola had followed America through the changes in the world. When the hamburger became popular there it was. When America introduced McDonald’s to the world, Coke went right along with it. It was nostalgic.
“England, eat your fries, they are going to waste!”
He just rolled his eyes and sighed, taking a fry and continuing to sip at his Coke.
