Author's Note: When I started to re-write Behind the Net from Pierre’s perspective, I started to think about how much story there would be to tell when Pierre went off to college, leaving David alone in Juneau. I became obsessed with the idea of writing the next chapter in their story and now that it’s finished, I am absolutely in love with how it turned out and the original characters I added into the story! If anyone reads this, leave me a comment and let me know!

After taking a couple of hours to lay and cuddle together, eventually Pierre took David out and about to see his campus and to eat some lunch. Though it was Thanksgiving, there were still plenty of students wandering the campus for a variety of reasons - some students were from too far away for it to be worth the trip home for such a short break in classes, some couldn’t afford travel, some simply didn’t celebrate or didn’t want to. Whatever the reason, the two were far from alone as they walked around, Pierre holding David’s hand as he led him to different buildings or different parts of campus that he went to frequently or even just liked. David found the afternoon pleasant and enjoyed the way Pierre was pulling him around, showing him where he had been existing the last three months. He continuously found himself looking up at his boyfriend and smiling, glad that the huge emotions of their reunion were out of the way now so that they could simply enjoy being in each other’s presence.

For lunch they had gone to the cafeteria, which was where Pierre typically had the majority of his meals. Having no kitchen in his dorm to be able to attempt to cook for himself and no car to take him easily far off of campus, he relied on the options that were on campus and the cafeteria was his most frequented spot. David had felt a little shy, like someone would know he didn’t belong, but Pierre assured him there was no problem with non-students eating there; they were paying for what they took, after all.

They had only been sitting down at a table together for a few minutes before a classmate had approached Pierre and was talking to him like they were old friends. David watched the interaction with a mild sense of fascination, always impressed with the way Pierre so easily spoke to other people and managed to make friends everywhere he went. He was a little lost in his thoughts when all of a sudden Pierre was introducing him and David straightened up a little and blushed lightly, hearing the way the other boy said the words, “My boyfriend, David,” without a care in the world, as if there was no part of him that was nervous about introducing him as such.

Further surprising him, the guy he had just introduced him to had reacted with excitement and a nod, saying, “Pierre’s talks about you all the time.” David smiled and gave a wave, feeling too shy to say much in response aside from a quiet greeting.

Eventually the boy walked away and David’s blush suddenly intensified as he leaned toward Pierre and said, “He was so chill about it!”

Pierre gave a soft laugh and a nod before picking up his cheeseburger and taking a big bite. “Most people have been,” he said with a cheekful of burger and a nod.

“Really?” David asked, before picking up a fry and beginning to nibble on the end of it.

Pierre nodded again and swallowed his bite, before emphasizing, “Most. Some people have been dicks but I just stopped talking to them after that.” And again, seeming entirely unphased, he took another big bite of his burger.

“You’re really not embarrassed or stressed out about it at all, are you?” David asked slowly, a soft smile on his lips.

Pierre swallowed his bite and stared into David’s eyes as he responded, “Of course not. I love you. Anyone that doesn’t like that isn’t for me.”

David’s smile grew more tender as he stared lovingly at Pierre, his head tilting a little to the side in his adoration. Then, without another word, he picked up his own cheeseburger and began to eat. A few more times as they sat there someone came over and started to talk to Pierre, and each time this happened Pierre introduced David as his boyfriend without a second thought, his aura warm and happy and carefree. David watched him as he did, loving how free the other boy seemed. Even back in Juneau after they had been forcibly outed, Pierre had always had an edge of defiance and self defense about him, even anger, but here it was different. It seemed he had been making real friends who actually knew who he was as a person; David loved this change for his boyfriend.

They went back to Pierre’s dorm for a short while after that, cuddling in his bed and watching a movie on the laptop that he primarily used for classes. A couple of times they had found themselves definitely not watching the movie, though Pierre continued to pull them back from each other before their makeout sessions could get too out of hand. He had plans for that evening and he wanted the night to go perfectly before anything went too far. He told David that he had a date planned for them, something which they had never done back home in Juneau, and that it would be worth the wait. Intrigued by how mysterious he was being about it, David allowed himself to be reeled back in. He was extremely curious about what Pierre would take him to do on a date and found himself anxiously awaiting the evening to come.

When the time finally came to leave, Pierre told David to make sure to grab a good coat. The sun was going down and it would soon feel much colder outside, so David obliged and threw his winter coat over the top of the sweater he had been wearing. When he turned, he saw Pierre standing in front of him with a sweet smile on his lips and he tilted his head to the side again, wondering again what exactly he was up to.

Pierre grabbed a dark green knitted snow hat with a fluffy pom pom on the top and pulled it gently over David’s head, and as he did Hunter flashed through David’s mind and his smile faltered a little. Pierre then grabbed a dark green scarf and wrapped it around his neck, further reminding David of when Hunter had done this to him at the football game. The memory made his stomach hurt a little and for a moment his face showed slight discomfort, but he quickly hitched the smile back on his lips, telling himself to not let his ex-boyfriend’s inappropriate flirtation ruin this very cute moment with his actual boyfriend.

Pierre hadn’t noticed the momentary shift in David’s expression and just smiled at him, saying, “There, now you have some Alaska Anchorage school spirit.” David looked down at the scarf, realizing that the school’s initials were embroidered on it in the same color as the yarn it was knitted out of; it was subtle enough that he might not have noticed if Pierre hadn’t said anything. “I figured you’d like something like this a little better than one of the green and yellow ones,” he added, his smile widening slightly.

David beamed up at him and leaned up to place a gentle kiss on the other boy’s lips, before dropping back down flat on his feet and saying, “Good choice.”

“I know my David is all about fashion first,” Pierre said softly. The two shared a sweet smile before heading out hand in hand.

Pierre called for a taxi and together they waited outside, their breath visible in the air in front of them in the cold late-November air. “Don’t you miss having your car?” David asked curiously.

“Honestly not really,” Pierre responded, giving his hand a little squeeze just because he wanted to. “I’m so busy all the time I don’t usually leave campus so I really wouldn't use it much even if it was here.”

Soon the taxi arrived and they got in, riding in relative silence as they headed toward their destination. When they got there and got out, David saw that it was an indoor ice rink and he smiled wide, thinking that this was one of the cutest and most perfect places the other boy could have possibly taken him. It had been months since they had skated together, and this would be their first time doing so as a couple. As they made their way inside, David’s mind went back to their first time skating together, and the way he had fallen and hit his head, and the way Pierre had helped him up and held him until he could stand, and the way Pierre had skated backwards and let David use his arms for support. It was such a sweet memory for him… up until he had tripped, accidentally grabbed Pierre’s hand, and Pierre had panicked and pushed him away while calling him a fag, of course.

They got their skates and worked to put them on, and it was with a dreamy smile that David remembered the way that he had done such a bad job lacing up his skates the first time he had ever put them on, and the way Pierre had told him he was doing it wrong but he had been so stubborn and hated him so much that he refused to listen until he had tried to stand and was forced to admit that he had, in fact, done it wrong. After his season playing hockey, this time he needed no help and would also need no support to stay standing, though he hoped he would still get to hold on to Pierre just the same.

Together they made their way out to the ice, Pierre making it look effortless and easy. He spun around a little before stopping and facing David with a hand held out for him. David smiled and took his hand, saying, “Show off,” before stepping out onto the ice with him. This time he didn’t fall, but this time Pierre didn't panic over their contact. They started to skate together, David much more steady than he had been the previous November, and suddenly a thought occurred to him. He looked at Pierre, smiling gently, and said, “It’s been just over a year since you taught me how to skate.”

Pierre thought about it for a moment before he realized that it was true. He wrapped his arm around David’s lower back and leaned in close to place a gentle peck on his cheek, before whispering in his ear, “I promise I won’t call you a fag this time.”

David couldn’t help but laugh at that and soon Pierre had let go of his waist and instead grabbed his hand again. “Yeah, please don’t,” David responded, amusement in his voice. “It’s crazy to think about how much has changed in a year.”

“Seriously,” Pierre responded simply, before a devious smile worked its way onto his lips. “You don’t skate like a newborn giraffe anymore,” he teased.

“Hey!” David exclaimed, earning laughter from the other boy. “And you’re not scared of how much you like me anymore,” he retorted, raising his eyebrows and giving a smirk.

Pierre’s eyes softened and he raised David’s hands to his lips, placing a sweet kiss against his skin before saying, “Not even a little bit.” He thought for a second before adding, “But maybe that should scare me. I’m only eighteen but I’m one hundred percent sure I’ve found the person I’m gonna spend the rest of my life with… and for some reason that doesn’t scare me at all.”

David blushed, his smile dropping a little as a warm sensation took over in his chest and he simply stared at Pierre. “Good,” he responded quietly, giving Pierre’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Because I was thinking the exact same thing.”

They continued to skate for the next thirty minutes, holding hands the whole time and chatting lightly about anything that came to mind. Eventually Pierre pulled them off of the ice so he could use the bathroom and David sat on a bench near the rink and waited for him to come back. After a short while, he became aware of Pierre approaching him again and he turned, a wide smile on his lips, though when Pierre smiled down at him and held out a styrofoam cup with a plastic lid to him and said, “Hot chocolate,” the smile fell from David’s lips for a moment. Again, Hunter and his stupid unsolicited flirtation jumped into his mind and he had a harder time shaking it off as he reached out to grab the cup.

This time Pierre noticed the change and he tilted his head to the side a little, his brow furrowing as he said, “Do you not like hot chocolate? I thought you did.”

David shook his head and smiled before saying cryptically, “No! Sorry, I do! I was kind of half lost in a thought when you walked up.” Then he popped open the lid and began to sip, cursing himself for letting Hunter ruin another sweet moment with his boyfriend for him. Stupid ass, he abused the other boy in his mind.

Pierre accepted the excuse without question and sat down on the bench next to him, sipping on his own hot chocolate and enjoying the sweet moment together. He looked out onto the ice, watching idly as people they didn’t know skated by, letting his thoughts wander a little bit as he did. The feel of something on his shoulder caught his attention and he looked over, seeing that David had rested his head on his shoulder while continuing to hold the cup to his lips. He smiled before looking back out at the ice and leaning his head over to rest on the top of David’s, loving the soft bubble they sat in together and yearning for the day in the future that it would always be like this.

Soon they had both finished their cups of hot chocolate and Pierre tossed their cups in the trash before pulling David back onto the ice for the remainder of the time in their public skate time block. At a certain point Pierre had dropped David’s hand and began to skate backwards in front of him, skating in swerves or making circles around him, goofing around and showing off in a boyish manner. David watched him with the utmost enjoyment, loving how silly and relaxed he could be and remembering back to a time when Pierre had been nothing but a tense asshole who was constantly mean to him and shoved him in lockers. Things really had changed incredibly drastically in the span of one year.

After wrapping up at the ice rink, the two took another taxi to a restaurant for dinner. Pierre supposed he would have to consider having his car brought to Anchorage for the following school year because with David around he could see himself wandering off campus significantly more often and they couldn’t exactly make a regular habit of taking multiple taxis around town in one day. Still, he was excited to get to take David around on an actual date, to get to pay for dinner and buy him hot chocolate and spoil him a little bit. It felt a little crazy to him that they had been dating for just shy of eight months and had never done this before and he looked forward to the time when they would get to make this sort of thing a regular occurrence.

Getting to sit at an actual restaurant together, smiling at each other from across a dimly lit table and talking about whatever occurred to them was an experience that they both enjoyed more than they could have imagined. The restaurant wasn’t particularly fancy, something which David was grateful for because he was not dressed for fine dining, but the food was good and the atmosphere was calm and nice, but not so quiet that it felt uncomfortable speaking at a normal speaking level.

Pierre randomly reached his hand over and grabbed onto David’s, his brown eyes warm and tender as he did. David’s smile softened and he turned his hand a little to grab Pierre’s back, his hazel eyes glimmering as they stared at the other boy across the table.

“You’re my favorite person,” Pierre told him gently, causing David’s smile to widen and a soft laugh to come out of him.

“You’re being so cute tonight,” David replied, his cheeks a little pink.

“I’ve just really missed you,” Pierre told him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “It almost doesn’t feel real that you’re here.”

“Just wait ‘til it’s all the time,” David reminded him.

“It’ll be here before we know it,” Pierre responded quietly. For a moment they did nothing but stare at each other and David suddenly wished that they were alone. He felt the strong urge to be wrapped up in Pierre’s arms kissing him and bit down on his lip a little as he thought of it. Pierre tilted his head to the side and gave a skeptical smile at the look that had suddenly crossed the other boy’s features. “What are you thinking about?”

David’s cheeks flushed a little more and he smiled and shook his head, though he thought his eyes would give away what was on his mind. He watched as Pierre’s expression shifted to be a little devious and he knew that he knew, unable to stop himself from smiling wider as that look of understanding passed between them. He gave a soft laugh and covered his mouth with his other hand, turning to look away before his blush got out of control.

The whole way back to Pierre’s dorm that night was filled with a nervous kind of tension and neither of them spoke much. It reminded David of the times before they had been together when they had spent hours together without speaking. At the time he had thought it was because Pierre had nothing to say to him, but he knew now that the other boy had been overwhelmed with thoughts he was too afraid to speak and that was why he had always been so quiet. Back then, he never would have guessed that Pierre’s mind had been running the whole time they were together; there had been no way for him to know just how complex the older boy’s mind was.

The tension built between them as they made their way back up to Pierre’s dorm, their grip on the other’s hand tight. David felt his heart racing the closer they got, knowing what they were about to experience together for the first time. There was nothing to stop them this time, and everything that day had been to lead up to this time alone together. Pierre had gone out of his way to give him a sweet and romantic night, and he knew now what was next. He was as nervous as he was excited and he hardly saw his surroundings as they walked down the hall and came to a stop outside of Pierre’s dorm room.

Without needing to unlock the door, Pierre turned the knob and opened the door, pulling David in and closing it behind them. For a moment David just stood and stared, seeing that the room in front of them was drastically different than it had been the last time they had left it earlier that day. Warm fairy lights had been strung along the walls, new fluffy bedding and pillows had been put on the bed, candles were lit and littered the room over every flat surface, and there was soft music playing in the background. David turned to look at Pierre with bewildered confusion, seeing as the other boy locked the door and smiled at him nervously.

“When…?” was all that David managed to get out.

Pierre smiled and walked toward him, placing his hands gently on David’s upper arms and saying, “It’s really handy having a girl best friend.”

David’s jaw dropped a little and a surprised laugh came out of him. “You’re just full of surprises today,” he said slowly.

“I’ve got a trick or two up my sleeve sometimes,” he responded with a crooked smile.

David’s eyes glanced over and saw Pierre’s roommate’s bed on the opposite side of the room and a thought occurred to him. “Wait, what about your roommate?”

“He’s from here, his parents live like ten minutes away,” Pierre explained with a smile. “He’ll be gone until Sunday after you leave.” Truthfully, Pierre had begged his roommate for at least one night in the dorm with David alone and Jay had told him that he could stay with his parents through the long weekend, something which was more than Pierre could have ever asked for.

“So… it’s just us the whole time I’m here?” David asked, his cheeks warming up at the realization.

Pierre nodded, never pulling his eyes away from David’s as he stared down at him. He reached a hand up and cupped David’s cheek, staring into his eyes for several long seconds before closing the distance between them and kissing him tenderly. David’s eyes fell closed and his hands grasped gently at the material of Pierre’s coat. He leaned forward into Pierre, his body falling against the taller boy’s chest as his heart squeezed and his body began to warm up.

Soon their kiss became deeper, more passionate, their hands became desperate and began to work to pull off jackets and clothes, kicking off shoes and socks, grabbing at each other in a needy combination of love and lust. Everything they had been holding back all that day and for the entire three months they had been apart was coming out of them now, crashing against each other. They touched and kissed and felt all of each other, entirely lost in this moment with each other as they experienced something entirely new for both of them.

Things progressed slowly and nervously, delving in cautiously for their first time being together in this way. A finger eventually progressed to two, and two fingers eventually progressed to Pierre himself, entering slowly and delicately, afraid to move too fast, afraid to hurt the smaller boy beneath him, though David continued to look into his eyes, nodding and biting his lip, his fingers digging into Pierre’s back to urge him on further. When he had pushed his entire length inside, they stayed still for a couple of minutes, Pierre terrified of hurting David but also feeling like he was going to go crazy if he couldn’t give in to the urges of his body soon. David laid on his back with his eyes closed and his legs spread with his knees up against Pierre’s sides, adjusting to the fullness he was experiencing, having never felt anything like it in his entire life. Every part of him felt warm and he couldn’t stop the way his chest was rising and falling fast and hard, his mouth slightly open.

When he felt ready, David opened his eyes and looked into Pierre’s, able to see the restraint and longing behind those deep brown eyes, and he gave him a little nod and pressed his fingers again into the skin of his back. Pierre watched as he began to move, afraid to move out so instead pressing in at first. David felt the most intense, pleasant, warm butterflies throughout his entire torso and his eyes fell closed again, pressing his fingers harder into Pierre’s back, a tiny moan escaping the back of his throat. Seeing that David didn’t appear to be in pain, Pierre began to give into the desperate need of his body and he leaned his forehead down to rest against David’s shoulder, allowing himself to move more now, letting his natural instinct to move his hips in and out to pick up slowly. His hands gripped large handfuls of the comforter under them, his breathing getting gradually heavier with the effort of controlling himself from moving too hard or too fast no matter how much his body wanted him to.

As they continued, they gradually began to get more comfortable, starting to forget the nervousness and newness of this experience. Pierre began to place gentle kisses against David’s collarbone, his arousal beginning to take control of his mind and causing him to forget his caution bit by bit, beginning to move faster and harder though still nowhere near what his body was begging of him. David’s arms moved to wrap around Pierre’s neck and hold desperately onto the back of his head, hugging him to his chest and pulling himself ever so slightly off of the mattress to move his hips against Pierre’s gentle thrusting, craving more.

Pierre’s body reacted to David’s silent request and his speed increased, feeling his intense need to be deeper mounting. Soon he had kissed a trail up the other boy’s neck, under his jaw, back to his lips, drawing out his tongue and kissing him passionately. David grabbed gentle handfuls of the hair on the back of Pierre’s head, moaning softly into his mouth, the burning sensation in his chest growing and spreading through his limbs, into his fingers and his toes. Then he felt Pierre’s hand trail down his side and wrap around him and David’s eyes fluttered open and he looked blindly up, taking a deep gasping breath of surprise.

Pierre pulled his face back slightly so he could look down at him, the mere sight almost sending him over the edge but he held back, not ready to be finished or to stop seeing that look on David’s face. He continued to stroke him, his body not ceasing its thrusting movements, fighting against finishing with everything he had in him to prolong this moment as long as he could. His hand began to move faster and he watched as David’s eyes became more clouded, as his mouth fell further open, as his brow furrowed and his breathing became ragged.

And then it all became too much to resist anymore and David felt himself tumble over the edge, his eyes closing hard as he finished, pulling hard on Pierre’s hair as he whispered out, “F-fuck.”

The feel of warmth on his hand and stomach and David’s whispered word, mixed with the way he felt David’s insides contracting around him was all it took to break the last straw of his physical resistance. Pierre’s forehead dropped back to David’s shoulder, his back hunched and he moaned as he finished hard, his thrusting increasing outside of his control, feeling himself spilling deep inside of the other boy, his body keeping him moving until the last wave of orgasm finished coursing through him. Then he stopped moving and held himself deep inside, another breathy moan escaping him as the last of the feelings moved through his body.

For a moment he simply laid there, still inside of David, his eyes closed and his forehead pressed against David’s shoulder, breathing hard with his mouth open. He felt David’s hands release their grip on his hair though his hug on his head became a bit more desperate and he felt as the smaller boy’s body began to tremble under him. David felt emotions ripping through him as he lay there, so overwhelmed with the feelings crashing through him that despite his best efforts he felt tears rolling down the sides of his cheeks and into his ears. He held tightly to Pierre, hugging him as close as he could, unable to emotionally handle how deeply he loved him and how intimately close he felt with him in that moment.

He felt Pierre begin to push himself away from his chest and immediately David released his grip on his head, using his hands to wipe away his tears, feeling oddly exposed and embarrassed at the fact that he was crying. Pierre didn’t notice David’s tears at first, his eyes trained down on David’s chest as he focused on the movement of pulling slowly out of him, not wanting to pull out too quickly, still worried that it would be uncomfortable or even painful. As Pierre pulled out, David began to feel the oddest sensation of physical emptiness and tears began to fall out of his eyes faster, leaving him feeling baffled at the emotional response he was having but unable to control it at the same time. He continued to frantically wipe at his tears as Pierre turned his back and reached for a towel, beginning to clean himself up.

When Pierre handed him the towel David took it and cleaned himself up as best as he could, trying to keep his eyes averted but Pierre’s hand on his cheek pulling his face toward him told him he hadn’t been able to hide it after all, despite his best efforts. Pierre searched David’s face with concern, wiping away his tears with his thumb. “What’s wrong?” he asked, sounding truly puzzled and worried.

David just shook his head and wrapped his arms around Pierre, hugging him tight and closing his eyes against his bare, sweaty shoulder. “Nothing’s wrong,” he responded honestly. “I can’t explain it, I just… I felt so much at once, I dunno, I just started crying and I can’t help it.”

Pierre held David against him tightly, allowing his eyes to fall closed and smiling a little. “So these aren’t bad tears?”

David shook his head again against Pierre’s shoulder, whispering, “Not bad at all.”

Pierre smiled a little wider and cradled David against himself as he laid them back in bed, moving the blanket to cover their naked bodies. David nuzzled up against him, smiling a little and no longer fighting the tears that were still streaming from his eyes. “I love you,” he said softly.

Pierre gave a happy sigh and began to run his fingers through David’s hair before replying with a gentle, “I love you too.”

Neither knew how long they laid together like that, though neither was attempting to keep track. The familiar feeling of being surrounded by their own warm, fuzzy bubble settled in around them in the soft lighting of the string lights and candles, the gentle music playing in the background the perfect soundtrack for their feelings. Eventually David’s tears stopped and he was left with nothing but a kind of perfect happiness that he hadn’t quite experienced before, no matter how many times he had been with Pierre in a different sense in the past. He knew without having to acknowledge it that he had just fallen even deeper in love with the other boy and that their connection had strengthened to a new level.

Pierre’s fingers traced gentle circles along David’s skin, down his shoulders, across his shoulder blades, up his neck, into his hair. He was more certain now than he ever had been before that David was the only person he saw in his future no matter how far into it he looked or where he might possibly end up in life. He knew as long as there was air in his lungs and blood in his veins he would want David there at his side, and he told himself with determination that he was going to do whatever it took to make sure that desire became a reality. Until his dying breath, he would continue to work every day to deserve David’s love and to make sure he did everything in his power to make sure he got to keep it.
