Today's post is not serious business. In fact, it is far from serious business. It is instead about trashy shoujo ( Read more... )

Also, surprisingly enough, people *die* in this manga. Not bad guys, but likable, recurring characters from the main cast *die* horrible, time/setting-appropriate deaths (without being terribly gory -- remember, this *is* trashy shoujo :P). And their deaths not only do not come out of nowhere, are not melodramatic, but also have serious consequences (both good and bad), and never once does the heroine forget the people who have laid down their lives for her on her journey to success.

That is the reason I liked this manga.

Also, Ursula. ;o;

Also

EVERYONE.

AND DW. I'll take a code. =D

Yeah, I actually first picked this up a few years ago but was kind of bored by the first few chapters so didn't read on at the time.

This time it was because of that first major death that I kept reading. Because wow, I definitely wasn't expecting *that* to happen. (Was instead expecting a contrived rescue and then the kid becoming one of those peppy sidekicks. Uhhh guess not.)

Yeah Ursula. T_T (How far have you read? Between onemanga and mangafox I think the entire series is online except for vol. 25 and about half of vol. 24 -- those I grabbed the raws for. I should see if I can find the official releases though, next time I'm at a bookstore.)

Aaaand I've sent you an invite. You should get the code in your email, if not, let me know!

I've never been a major fan of shoujo - the last one I read was Fruits Basket and that was a disappointment. Did not like Nana much, though it was interesting at first. Skip Beat is making me feel better about the genre, though.

I wouldn't mind getting a DW code, if it's not too late. But if someone needs it more, give it to them instead. :)

Same here actually -- but every now and then I get bored and just pick a random series to read if I'm in the mood. Usually I drop them within the first few chapters though!

And sure. Is your email still the same though? (moira_iolanthe?)

Yes it is. Thanks so much, dear! :)

One of these days I'll read all these series you talk about - I find that you have excellent taste in manga ;p

Soul Eater was like FMA-ish awesome. Agree with dorkiness of Stein and Marie, but it was awesome dorky. XDDD

I have mixed feelings on shoujo. I'm inclined just to read things because I'm curious about them, so I don't really pay attention to the genre and then find out how most people categorize it. I think most of the stuff defined as shoujo I read was either trashy or had too much angst, but was likeable because it was pleasing to the eye or amusing. Probably the reason why I even read half of Clamp's stuff.

yesssssss. XDDD

lol. I used to be a pretty hardcore Clamp fan early on... but then they abandoned X/1999 and I never really managed to get into XXXholic or Tsubasa. iirc Clamp is a bit tough to categorize though? In that though their art style and some of their storytelling focus is very shoujo, some of their series are more seinen/shounen? Dunno though. Clamp is just WEIRD. XD

Other than Clamp I started out more in shounen or guy-oriented stuff (DBZ, Gundam Wing, Hikaru no Go...) so Fruits Basket was probably the first shoujo series I followed regularly, but I never quite liked the way it ended (despite all my ships getting their Happily Ever Afters, or close to it). After that I mostly just picked up random series as time wasters, haha, though at some point I just completely lost all my patience for the teenage waaangst.
