We had a four day prompt freeze this time because the mods needed to discuss some very important issues regarding the meme. There has been an air of unfriendliness and disrespect widespread on our meme for months now and it doesn’t promote an atmosphere of community

It wasn't when I linked to it. It's been deleted for who knows what reason yesterday some time during the night/early morning. There's sherlock_rant though, brand new and well functioning.

If we keep the Rant Post, we won't have to worry about it elsewhere. And if you don't like the Rant Post, don't go on it. IDK, seems pretty simple to me.

Is there any chance the rant post can be saved? Maybe if everyone agrees to follow the 'Bambi rule' and be nice to each other, you could leave it open, as a trial, for another month?

It just seems a shame for it to disappear so suddenly.

Yeah but then you have to realize that it's at the mod's discretion to choose what denotes "hate" which means if they don't like it, they'll delete it.

Oh yes, I'm all for mods deleting hate. I just don't see why harmless venting is banned now as well as hate, when the venting is bothering no one and actually helping a minority. Why not just ban the hate?

Because anything that offends the mods even slightly, anything that kind of hurts their feelings, can be deleted for being "hate".

The mods should just take a poll.

Yeah but surely 'I got stood up for the fourth time by my friends - not happy'/'my period huuuuurts'/'why does nowhere sell this brand of cheese ffff annoying'/'my boss sucks'/etc. aren't classified as hate?

A poll wouldn't be a good idea since it would be biased by people who don't like the idea of the rant post and therefore would vote against it - people who stayed off it and were not affected by it anyway. It's existence doesn't affect these people, while it does significantly to people who do use it and would likely vote for it.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm trying to say? I am against the shut down of the Rant Post because if the mods personally feel attacked by anything, even something minor, then they can delete because they want to/have the power to and no one can say otherwise. Because they can just call it 'hate' and be done with it.

You know what? That's why they are mods. We can't take a poll every time they do their job, that would be completely unworkable. We have to assume that the mods are reasonable human beings who are capable of making judgement calls.

And you know, looking at their track record, they've done a pretty good job of that. This place is awesome in large part because of their reasonable efforts to keep the place sane and happy.

Most LJ comms are not a democracy, and I honestly don't mind that as long as the mods are reasonable (which these guys are). And if they're not, I just leave the comm. It's not hard.

What's also not hard is not going to the Rant Post. We basically self-police, it's not a huge deal.

I never understood why there had to be a rant post in the first place, so I welcome this development.
