We had a four day prompt freeze this time because the mods needed to discuss some very important issues regarding the meme. There has been an air of unfriendliness and disrespect widespread on our meme for months now and it doesn’t promote an atmosphere of community.

So, the mods have come up with a few new standards.

1. Be nice to each other, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. This is called the Bambi Rule and we are at the stage that we have to adopt it. Only give unless someone negative comments if someone asked for concrit, and even then there's a way to say it. “You suck” is not constructive criticism, neither is “your userpic is ugly” or “go back to tumblr.”

2. There's a real human being behind every anon user. It's easy to forget it while on the Internet, but words can hurt. You never know what kind of life situation a person is going through and it’s not on to put someone down for no reason. Additionally, not every opinion/thought needs to be posted. The meme is not an outlet for every thought that pops into our heads.

3. There are trolls browsing the meme. Don’t give them any of the attention they crave. However, not everyone is a troll, and just because someone interpreted a prompt differently or has a difference of opinion doesn't make them a troll, and insulting or accusing them rarely has a positive outcome.

4. People who wish to post anon should be allowed to do so without the threat of being "outed". If you think you recognise someone, keep it to yourself.

5. There will be no new Rant Posts after the current one closes. The Rant Post has become a terrifying place where people are being cruel, disrespectful, intolerant and petty. After that one reaches 10,000, it’s gone for good. There are plenty of other places on the internet where you can anonymously vent your frustrations with the world without consequences.

If the first four rules here are disregarded, comments will be frozen/deleted at moderators’ discretion. Continue to send us notifications in the Page-a-Mod post.

The Chatter Post will remain. You can discuss things there all you like, but the first four rules here apply to the entire meme. No ranting or hate should be anywhere.

It’s not fun for anyone to be scared of posting prompts or fills or comments. Let’s work as a community and get back to what the meme was started for: love and fans of the Sherlock BBC show.

I'm sad to see the rant post go because it was the one place where I got very useful advice for some rl problems and struggles, but I guess the chatter post will do if you mods are alright with it? I mean, Chatter is the place to talk about anything and everything, but I guess it could also be a place where one could seek for advice? One of the useful things the rant post did was being a place where somebody could talk about a problem they were having and get some concrete advice, could we use the chatter post for that? Please?

Of course. That's totally fine.

I like this development. Hopefully it'll see the chatter post become more active, because tbh most of the nicer threads on the rant post belong there.
I wouldn't say the rant post was terrifying but it can be a little hostile. It'll be nice to have a friendlier atmosphere around here :)

thanks mods for all your awesome work, as usual!

Least terrifying anon place I've ever frequented.

At what point does something move from asking advice (as you said was suitable for the chatter post) to ranting?

To pick an arbitrary topic, is venting about bullies okay so long as there is a request for advice at the end, or must they use an impartial and purely factual voice throughout, as saying you hate a person, even a bully, is 'not nice'?

I can see where you're coming from with the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" rule, and I don't condone the flaming and shitstorms that go down on some fills, but saying that unless concrit is asked for (at least I think that's what your saying, that sentence seems a bit jumbled to me), we can't say anything negative?

Do you know how big a can of worms that could be opened by this rule? In my experience, the ones who need con-crit the most are the ones who take con-crit as a personal attack so never ask for it.

Worst case scenario, we'll have fills that have taken the piss in terms of quality, like we've had in the past, that no-one can criticize in anyway because the author hasn't asked for concrit. I'm not saying it's a bad rule, but I think the specifics of that rule need to be a bit tighter.

And as an example, we had an author recently who filled in a lot of prompts that angered people. Originally they were given con-crit about spelling and punctuation, and it was met with "lol, no thanks". The quality of the fills didn't leave much to be appreciated, either. They were rushed, messy and barely resembling what the prompts had asked for.

Eventually, either the on-going con-crit or the anger on the rant page sunk in and they actually put effort into their writings now. Yes, the anger sometimes got out of hand, but it's all about communication. People's Con-crit, which at the beginning was polite, was met continually with disinterest and rebuffs.

What are we supposed to do if that sort of thing happens again? And with the continuous flood of new people around here, it probably will happen again. You can't just protect the fillers, you have to protect the prompters too, otherwise people won't want to prompt.

Sorry but that was the generally accepted rule even before the mods have said that in the post above. It's always been considered rude to leave concrit here unless an author asks for it, always. So if an author doesn't want concrit for any reason whatsoever and doesn't ask for it, then don't give concrit and scroll past, that's always been the policy.

Yeah, but who cares if someone posts a crap fill -- someone might come up with something way better. There are no limits to # of fills, right?

I care. I'm not going to post a fill after someone has already done it badly. Say what you want about second fills but you can't argue that there are far less of them than first fills.

What?

Dude, people do post second (and third and fourth) fills for any prompt that they have inspiration for. If you have a fill written and you decide not to post it because someone else has already posted a crap fill -- that's your hang up, that's not common behavior at all. A bad fill is not some kind of poxy jinx.

I'll tell you what people don't write fills for: places where they fear they are going to be pile driven or chewed out if they write something someone doesn't like. That's a real muse killer.

I'm more likely to post a fill if someone else has done it badly, and have done at least three I can think of off hand, so we all balance out in the end.

the ones who need con-crit the most are the ones who take con-crit as a personal attack so never ask for it.

Then that's a pretty good indicator that you shouldn't be giving it when it's not asked for. No one is guaranteed a "quality fill" when they prompt here. It isn't anyone's job to make fillers shape up and it isn't the filler's job to write to anyone's specifications.

What are you supposed to do if it happens again? Scroll on by and reprompt.
