I forgot to mention how incredibly slow her (6 month old, middle-of-the-line) machine is, despite the fact that it's got better specs than my 4 year old laptop...
The reason Vista is such a honkin' huge kernel and so slow with that stuff is that they actually have teams of I.P. lawyer A.I.s debating and arguing whether or not the media is legal or not. Knowing that even perfect fakes can be made, politics inside the computer take over. Five year class action lawsuits take place in the span of only a few minutes.
Of course, since your computer is encloses this immensely sophisticated legal system - one that is a near replica of ours - the computer is bound to have a bit of a performance hit while it gets through the red tape.
Incidentally, that's why the volume was so low: the plaintiff is rarely heard above the arguments of the representing lawyers.
