“Absolutely not.”
“It could be beneficial for everyone involved-”
“Beneficial? Have you gone crazy? He will ruin our finances, steal our computers, assume our identities, escape with the furniture and take our wallets without breaking a sweat within the first week!”
“He’d be wearing a tracking anklet…”
“He’d dismantle the coffee machine and smile as he did so!”
Peter blinked. “Excuse me sir, but… isn’t that a bit of an overreaction?”
“And do it while wearing that ridiculous hat!”
Peter bit his tongue, torn between amusement and frustration. “Why don’t we give it a trial period. See if he can help us solve the Dutchman case?”
“Hmmm.”
After ten years of working with his boss, Peter had learned how to read him, so he braced himself with patience and waited for the final decision.
“One case,” said his boss at last. “And he’ll be your responsibility. And you’ll be checking his tracking data. And-”
“Thank you, sir,” inserted Peter quickly. “I’ll make sure he behaves and doesn’t dismantle the coffee machine.” And that he didn’t run, but Peter thought it was best not to give his boss any additional ammunition.
“On a second thought, that might not be such a bad idea. Our coffee really is horrible.” The agent paused. “Forget I said that.”
Peter cleared his throat. “I can handle Caffrey if you can help me with the Justice Department.”
“… Fine. But if this blows up in our faces-”
“It won’t,” said Peter firmly.
His boss gave him one more reluctant look before he nodded. “I’ll see what I can do.”
Peter grinned and stood up. “Thank you, Theodor.”
“I’ll be watching you both,” Mozzie called after him as Peter exited his office.
“Of course you will,” said Peter cheerfully before closing the door.
Scowling, Mozzie aka ASAC Theodor Winters stared at the empty space that Peter had just abandoned.
His division and the agents in it were like Mozzie’s family. Mozzie just knew that Neal Caffrey was going to be trouble. It was bad enough that his star agent was so obsessed with him. If Caffrey did anything to hurt Peter or mess up things at White Collar, Theodor would make sure that he regretted it deeply long after his fast return to prison.
Standing up, Theodor went to stare down at his division, feeling a wave of fondness as he observed the mingle and all of his agents downstairs. Then he sighed, returned back to his desk and picked up the phone. His eidetic memory still served him well, so he didn’t even have to look up the number of Department of Justice.
Mozzie was not a big fan of change. Still, things at White Collar were going to get interesting.
He dialed the number and waited for someone at Justice to pick up.
