WOW.
I am speechless. And in a good way.
They just - got it right. From the beginning to the end. I loved every second of it.
Wow.
Look, I’ll be the first to admit that Korra had its own share of downs and lows. The whole Bolin/Desna or Eska fiasco (could never remember who was who) was one moment where the show really stepped into it. When I first started watching, I liked the show, but I didn’t love it the way I loved Avatar: the Last Airbender. But boy, what they did with Season 3 and then Season 4…
Despite my skepticism, I eventually fell in love with each and every one of these characters. Korra’s struggle in Season 4 was so brilliantly portrayed it gave me creeps. And now the finale - they had Korra and Kuvira, two female characters in probably the most epic battle I’ve ever seen on TV. As if that wasn’t enough, then they had the guts to have Korra walk into the sunset (or spirit portal) with Asami. Two female characters of mixed races get their happy ending, together.
SQUEEE, I LOVE YOU SHOW SO MUCH!!!!
Wow. They have me in tears. Just, thanks.
There were so many other things to love, too - Meelo with the painbombs, the Beifong sisters, Mako getting his hero moment (Mako, you are AWESOME!!!), Bolin being AWESOME!!!, all the smart ways they fought the giant mechasuit, Pema (heee :D ), prince Wu growing up in his own way, Asami’s dad (NOOOO!!!) Zhu-Li and Warrick (I do have some doubts about their happiness, since Warrick is still a dick - but then again, Zhu-Li had proven that while she loves him, she will no longer let him treat her like crap, so maybe it can work). Also, loved Kuvira’s downfall and was happy to see that we finally got an explanation for her megalomaniac plans - and the fact that she saw her mistakes and was sorry, but still was going to be held responsible for her actions. This is actually a plot that Korra has shown repeatedly - that redemption is possible and desirable, but at the same time, you have to consider the victims and can’t just sweep aside any previous crimes because the perpetrator is now sorry - there has to a balance (something which Korra has already show with Hiroshi and to a degree with Zaheer).
And you know what I also noticed and loved? That Korra is finally not trying to do it all on her own. She has become a true leader and depends on the people around her. She moved past her demons and grew up so much I just have to be proud of her. Even if she had failed to defeat Kuvira on her own, the joined effort of everyone else would have eventually brought Kuvira down - but in the end, Korra found a way to connect with Kuvira, to understand her and talked her down. The compassion she showed there just had me in awe. She didn’t beat Kuvira because she was the Avatar or because she was better at smashing her around - she was the better person, and through that, she found victory and peace.
(My only nitpick would be Korra saying that she had to suffer to learn compassion, but I think I get how she means it. It’s not that suffering is necessary to teach compassion, it’s that Korra found something good even in her ordeal, the compassion for others, and that allowed her to move past her trauma. Show, I love you!)
Anyway, there was a lot I loved about the finale (the visuals!!! the battles!!!). So now I’m going to enjoy my happy tears and live with the happy image of Korra and Asami together.
THE GIRLS TOGETHER!!!! Awwwww………
If anyone can write me a Korra/Asami fic or even point me to a good one, I’ll adore you very very much.
