Denial is Just A River in Egypt
Chapter 9
by: Sharl/zielddhy
Changmin didn't even bother stopping when he strode across Jaejoong's restaurant to the office at the back. All the people knew him already anyway. The staff merely waved him a hi and went back to their works. Bursting through the door, Changmin prayed to every deity above that he'd be spared from witnessing any indecent act between Yunho and Jaejoong. The last time he had witnessed it he had to undergo intensive therapy and by the end of the week he was so furious with those two and blackmailed them.
He didn't see them for a whole month after that.
Anyway, by the time he opened the door he was so relieved seeing Jaejoong seated behind a large desk, surrounded by numerous cookbooks sprawled around him. He was clearly surprised and nearly jumped when the door banged open.
"Changmin, what the hell? Wait, are you alright? We haven't seen you all week and now you look like -devil, hell, insomniac demon- death," the chef finally commented. He closed down the recipe book and really looked at his dongsaeng. It was true. The architect had dark rings under his eyes, the face was so gaunt like he hadn't eaten anything for a whole week. This was the most miserable Jaejoong had ever seen him.
Changmin swallowed thickly. "I think I'm in love with Junsu," he blurted out.
Jaejoong blinked but then a smile morphed on his face and he cooed, "I thought you came here to ask for more food but you're in love with Junsu? That is so sweet~"
Changmin scowled. "It's not sweet, it's more like a disease," he leaned back at the door. "I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't even work on a new design; at this rate I'm gonna lose all my clients and end up as a homeless guy begging for alms at a dirty street corner somewhere." He drew a calming breath before putting both hands on his face, " I only slept with him one time and now all I can think about is his face and those ass."
The chef looked gleefully happy. "You've slept with him? When did this happen? And now you're in love with him?"
"I don't know, I just... think that I might be in love with him," Changmin mournfully said, "I don't know hyung, I'm just so confused."
"Well," Jaejoong tried, "why don't you tell me how you feel about him?" He gestured at the seat in front of him. Really, this guy needed serious help.
Changmin huffed and plopped down on the chair. He pouted a bit and stared at Jaejoong before began pouring his heart out. "You gotta help me with this hyung, it feels like I'm catching a terrible disease or addiction here. He's all I think about. I close my eyes I see Junsu, I hear a song and it reminds me of him. I sleep with some other guys and I think of Junsu."
The chef cut him off. "Wait, what, you sleep with other guys after you've had sex with Junsu?"
The architect gave him a look. "Of course I am, what are you talking about?"
Jaejoong scowled. "Changmin, you're gonna have to stop screwing around if you want to be Junsu's boyfriend."
"Whoa whoa whoa, slow down there buddy," Changmin raised his hand and chuckled, "Boyfriend? Who says anything about boyfriend? In case you forget, I don't do relationships and I most certainly don't want to be Junsu's boyfriend."
The chef quirked an eyebrow. "Well, what do you want then?"
Changmin looked at him and sulked again, swinging his feet like kids usually do on the playground. "I don't know~ I just want to be with him. All the time. I want to hear about his day and his stupid ocean and marine facts. I want to tell him about my day. I want to hold him at night and wake up with him the next morning." He then scoffed, "but I don't want to be his stupid boyfriend."
Jaejoong hid a smile.,i>Idiot "Changmin," he said slowly as if he's talking to a five year old, "what you've just described is a relationship between two people who love each other." He leaned over the table to whisper, "A monogamous."
Changmin looked as if he wanted to puke rainbows. "Mo-mono-monogamous relationship? Are you saying that I want to be Junsu's...boyfriend?"
"Yup," the other nodded happily, "and from what you described earlier, a pretty clingy one at that."
Changmin still looked too shock. "And that really, I'm actually in love with him?"
Jaejoong opened his mouth to answer but suddenly Yunho's voice cut him off. "You're totally in love with Junsu."
The architect froze. He then looked around expecting to see Yunho somewhere but he didn't hear the door opened and there was no Yunho anywhere. But he really did hear the CEO's voice earlier and judging from Jaejoong also frozen up like a dear caught in headlights, he also heard that. So that means Yunho was in the room before Changmin came in. There was no hiding place anywhere in the room though, unless-
"Jae- hyung," he dreadfully asked and pointed at the table, "is Yunho-hyung, by any chance, hiding under there?"
Jaejoong had the decency to blush.
"What the hell is he doing there-oh fuck," Changmin made a face, "don't answer that, I don't even want to know."
***************
The doorbell rang.
And in what felt like vicious cycle of déjà vu Kyuhyun opened the door. Leeteuk was standing in the hallway and smiled at him. "Hi Kyu, do you want to have lunch with us? We have too many foods delivered and I thought that since you seem to like skipping meals these days, why not eat with us?"
Kyuhyun frowned. He did not skip meals, that's for sure.
Except for the occasional lunner (lunch and dinner morphed into a single meal) every two days. And maybe some dinfast (dinner and breakfast at the same time because the odd hours he had them at dawn) every three days. But those are because he'd been too busy writing about Hikaru, that character was definitely the hardest one he'd ever write.
The fact that he'd already missed three deadlines didn't mean anything. And it was totally fine because Donghae had been moping about the whole Hyukjae-gone-MIA thing and didn't really care about Kyuhyun anyway.
So all in all everything was fine. If he could get his Hikaru muse back, everything would go back to the way things were before, regular meals and all that. Now the question was, how can he get the muse back. The last time the muse appeared was when he heard Choi Siwon talking about murder and stuffs so maybe he needed to see hi-
"Umm, Kyu, are you listening?" Leeteuk's voice brought him back to reality.
Kyuhyun gave the older man an apologetic smile. "Sure, hyung. I'd be happy to have lunch with you."
Leeteuk wasn't joking when he said he had too many foods. Kyuhyun looked in amazement at the mountainous food that were literally crowding dinner table. Foods from all over the world seemed to be there, but that wasn't what bothered Kyuhyun. "How do you get all of these from just one place?" The novelist asked.
It was Kangin who answered him. "One my patient's mom gave these to me this morning. Said that she wanted thank me for the successful surgery her son had about a week ago. Apparently all of these were the kind of foods she usually cooked for her family."
"So she is," Kyuhyun peered at some of the foods, "a Korean (kimchi jiggae, Seolleongtang, ddukbokkie, yangnyeom tongdak, japchae and bibimbap), with Japanese taste (tempura udon, sushi, sashimi, takoyaki and okonomiyaki) and American enthusiast (hamburger, cheeseburger, barberque ribs, hotdogs and fried chicken) with a hint of Italian (lasagna, spaghetti a la carbonara, bruschetta, margarita pizza and risotto) and Chinese heritage (fried rice, Kung pao chicken, Peking duck, xiao long bao, mantou and moo shu)?"
"Actually," Kangin shifted uncomfortably, "she is a Korean woman with a Japanese-Chinese husband and an American-Italian parents. And her son was an adopted Mexican twelve years old," he gestured at plates of burrito, tacos, enchiladas and some nachos. "Don't ask me why."
"And desserts are in the kitchen," Leeteuk added with a grim smile. "Well then. Let's tuck in!"
One hour later, a very satisfied Kyuhyun put down his chopsticks and groaned, "I don't think I can eat anymore. My stomach feels like its about to burst; all the dishes are so good."
Kangin echoed the thought. "Can we not talk about food for the next, I don't know, four months?"
Leeteuk gave his partner a withering look. "Trust me, you'll be asking for foods sooner than you might expect. You have such ravenous appetite, don't you know that?"
The doctor smiled. "That's not the only thing I have ravenous appetite for, as you have experienced yourself last night."
"Do you mind if I bring some for Changmin?" Kyuhyun cut off the conversation before he heard something... eerily disgusting. "I want to visit him tonight, he hasn't been sleeping well. And I'm sure he'd love the foods."
"Oh of course," Leeteuk stood up, "I'll pack some up now." He then went into the kitchen. Meanwhile, Kangin threw Kyuhyun a sly glance.
"So kiddo," he nonchalantly drawled, "how are you doing?"
"Fine."
"How's Changmin doing?"
"Fine." Aside from the insomnia and denial thing he got for that marine biologist.
"How's Siwon doing?"
"Fi-" Kyuhyun turned around and scowled, "how should I know that? I haven't seen him for almost three weeks" -twenty days, seven hours and eighteen minutes- "you should know better, he's your friend isn't he?"
Kangin smiled again, the same I-know-something-and-you-don't smile he'd been sporting since Kyuhyun walked in through the front door earlier. "I'd better help Teukie. Make yourself at home, kiddo." With that, Kyuhyun was left alone in the living room (there was no space to eat at the dining table so each of them just brought whatever they wanted to eat to the living room with few plates).
Kyuhyun was still scowling. That idiot Kangin, why the hell did he have to bring up about Siwon? Now Kyuhyun couldn't stop thinking about that stupid lawyer, about how he'd stolen his Hikaru muse. He then stood up and walked around the room, before stopping at nearby magazine stacks and picked one. He made a face looking at a perky female model at the cover, almost as perky as the receptionist at Siwon's lobby.
Okay, seriously, stop that. Stop thinking about him! Not everything has to reminds you of him Kyuhyun thought to himself. Feeling like an idiot for arguing with his own mind, he flipped the magazines and stumbled across a page that read: Five Sure Signs You're in Love! Read and Know Yourself Better!
1. You forget to eat
Super telltale. Forgetting to eat means you’re not only distracted, but that you also want that person more than you want food, so you forget all about it.
Against his own will, Kyuhyun's treacherous brains remembered what Leeteuk-hyung said earlier. About how he had skipped meals. But that was because of Hikaru. If his Hikaru muse was still here, he'd understand and delve into the character so quickly he wouldn't have skipped meals. The fact that Siwon was so like Hikaru definitely had nothing to do with that. At all. Period.
2. You can’t look at the person.
Suddenly, it’s impossible to hold a decent conversation with the object of your affection, because you’re afraid if you look them in the eye, they’ll be able to tell you’re melting for them inside.
Kyuhyun had to snort at that. 'Melting for the inside?' Seriously? What kind of stupid writer came up with that? So corny. And for the record, Kyuhyun never felt that way about Siwon, no sir.
....... It was a warm, funny feeling going through his belly that time when Siwon gave him that wine, not 'melting from the inside.' So corny.
3. You realize you miss them when they’re not around.
If you’re used to seeing the object of your affection at work or class and then one day they’re not there, you’ll feel like your whole day was wasted.
A ha! Okay, so this was the prove! He was not in love with Siwon because he never missed the man, not at all. In fact, he didn't even miss those stupid messages and phone calls that stupid lawyer had constantly sent him. Because hey, Siwon had his own life, he might be busy with those cases and murder trials. The man said so himself! Okay so he didn't explicitly said that, but Kyuhyun realized how busy a lawyer life can be, that's why Siwon hadn't called him or texted him or visited him for three days, nine hours and twenty-five minutes now. Yes, that must be it.
4. You get jealous about odd things.
You find out they saw a movie last night and now you are enraged. Why didn’t they think to invite you? Who did they go with?? Your ears turn red as you try and mask your jealousy. Or when people show interest in them and you suddenly want to keep them all to yourselves, at least until they say the 'L' word.
Kyuhyun scoffed. Siwon didn't watch movie, not at all. He'd tell Kyuhyun if he wanted to watch one, that's for sure. And well, maybe Kyuhyun does get a bit possessive sometimes about Siwon. Like that one time when Donghae wanted to meet the lawyer to say thanks for winning Kyuhyun's case and Kyuhyun had rejected the notion. But that's because it was really unnecessary. After all, Kyuhyun had said thank you to Siwon himself why would Donghae need to meet him?... Right?
5. You can’t concentrate on work.
Maybe even as you read this article, you’ll glance and realize that half an hour has gone by. That’s because you’re daydreaming. And you are in looo-oooove.
Kyuhyun glanced at his watch. Thirty minutes had passed. With him thinking and retracing any events that might concern that stupid lawyer and connecting those events with this stupid article.
Oh shit.
Oh fuck. Kyuhyun swallowed. I'm in love with Choi Siwon.
*************
"I'm in love with Choi Siwon."
Changmin raised his head from the glass of wine he'd been drinking. "What?"
Kyuhyun put the bags of food Leeteuk gave him on Changmin's dinner table but he didn't say anything about the food. Not when his heart felt like this, like it would burst out from his chest anytime soon. "I'm in love with Choi Siwon," he repeated.
"Oh. Wow. Well. Okay, umm," Changmin responded. "Good then! Congrats Kyu, I'm happy for you, I really am. You love him and he obviously loves you back." He gave his best friend a smile.
Now, Kyuhyun had been friends with Changmin for so long and even when the architect didn't say anything, he knew exactly what went through that fake smile of his. And that could only mean one thing.
"Changmin," Kyuhyun began, "do you finally realize that you're in love with Junsu?"
His best friend gave him a troubled look before finally nodded. Kyuhyun immediately engulfed the man in a hug. Stupid. Idiot. Adorable. Changmin.
"I've been so stupid, Kyu,so blind. How could I have not seen it? He's perfect and everything I wish for, but I just had to be such an idiot and ruin everything with my stupid pride." Changmin gripped the wine glass tightly.
The novelist didn't say anything for a moment. He knew how hard this was on Changmin, how disappointed he must be with himself. The two friends stayed there, wrapped in each other's hug before Kyuhyun broke the silence. "Min, it's time we put an end to this whole bachelor thing and finally confronted the truth. "
"What do you mean?"
Kyuhyun sat up a little bit straighter. "We will tell those guys how we really feel. At this time tomorrow, we'll meet each other at Jaejoong's restaurant, and hopefully we've resolved this. Somehow."
Changmin seemed discouraged by the idea but then he smiled for the first time in a week. "It doesn't seem like a bad idea," he shrugged, "I mean, we don't really have anything to loose now, do we?"
Kyuhyun smiled and offered his hand for a handshake. "Gentleman's agreement?" It was their thing. Whenever they were at a point of no return, the gentleman's agreement had been their secret, their commitment to each other so that neither could back out.
The architect returned the smile and grabbed his best friend's hand. "Gentleman's agreement."

Author's Note: I can't help but say: isn't ChangKyu so adorably stupid?? :D
