Enjoy reading!

Denial is Just A River in Egypt
Chapter 3
By: Sharl/zielddhy

“Hey, brat! What’s up?” that annoying voice, complete with a hard slap on his back, broke Kyuhyun’s concentration from the pages he was reading. The novelist looked up and scowled seeing his hyung’s boyfriend grinning widely at him.

“Hi, Kangin,” he replied and went back to reading. Currently he was in one of Leeteuk’s bookstores, wanting to buy few books. As it happened, Leeteuk was there as well, although he was busy talking to some other customers when Kyuhyun came in so the older man only gave him a quick smile earlier. Kyuhyun didn’t mind that and so he started to look around. However he forgot that if Leeteuk was there, most probably Kangin would also come there sooner or later.

The doctor smirked at Kyuhyun, “So! How’s it going over there?”

“Good,” Kyuhyun answered. He then moved towards the next shelf, hoping that the other would leave him alone. Unfortunately Kangin seemed pretty determined this afternoon and so he trailed behind Kyuhyun like an obedient (and oversized) puppy.

“How’s your lawsuit coming along? Have you met Siwon yet?”

Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. “Yes, I have.”

“So? He’s a great lawyer isn’t he?”

“I’m almost sure he is.”

“Almost? He is! People are literally lining up and they don’t mind paying his law firm big bucks and there’s a reason majority of it goes to him. Plus he’s a really nice and polite guy, like a gentleman from Victorian era or something.”

Kyuhyun snorted.

“What? He is!” Kangin said defensively.

The novelist gave the other a scathing glare, “No he is not. He’s a jackass and he’s totally rude.”

“Who’s totally rude?” Leeteuk popped up out from behind Kangin, placing a quick peck on the doctor’s cheek.

Kyuhyun’s scowl returned in full force. He hated it when people around him act all lovey-dovey and stuff. Granted, the two older men were in monogamous relationship with each other since a long time ago, but it doesn’t mean that Kyuhyun liked it when his hyungs behave this way. For him, all the affectionate displays seemed unnatural somehow. His last boyfriend told him that he had some serious PDA issues, and Kyuhyun broke up with the man faster than he could say ‘I love you.’

“Choi Siwon, the lawyer you introduced me to, remember?” he said answering Leeteuk’s question.

Leeteuk frowned, “What did he do to you?”

Kyuhyun then proceeded telling the pair what happened the other day. By the time he was finished, he could see Leeteuk’s face was flushed with anger.

The bookstore owner turned to face his lover. “You told me that Siwon is a perfect gentleman, then why did he behave so rudely to Kyuhyun? Are you lying to me?!”

“Ba..babe, calm down” Kangin stuttered.

Kyuhyun thoroughly enjoyed the sight of Leeteuk scolding the doctor and he didn’t bother to hide his delight at all. In fact, Kangin seemed to realize his amusement as he threw him a withering glare at which the novelist replied with a smirk.

Ah, now everything makes sense again.

*****************************

Changmin glared at the man standing oh so innocently in front of him. That damn scientist was here again. Ever since Junsu threw that rotten egg at Changmin, the marine biologist visited the construction site every single day. If he was done sprouting random ocean facts, Junsu would scream obscenities at him, while Changmin’s colleagues and partners alike watched with fascination.

The architect had tried to introduce Junsu to a representative from Howard Construction, with a hope that he would leave him alone. But alas, after the first fifteen minutes talking with Junsu, the representative was suspiciously called into a sudden meeting by his boss. The man didn’t return to the construction site, ever. All negotiations to every other party, Changmin included, after that incident occurred was done via phone.

Changmin wished he could have done the same.

Unfortunately, while the developer could avoid visiting the construction site, the architect didn’t have that kind of privilege. As much as he wanted to quit, the knowledge of the hefty success fee motivated Changmin to continue this project.

And so, here he was again, tuning out Kim Junsu’s nonsense as best he could. To think that he actually got out of bed feeling pretty cheerful this morning, and now all his good mood had completely evaporated.

Changmin was standing quite comfortably under a tree’s cooling shade, at least this way the sun’s blistering won’t get to him. Not that it was particularly hot anyway, it was still quite early. His latest sketch was sprawled all over nearby desk and he tried to concentrate on it, meanwhile ignoring Junsu’s infuriating presence. The marine biologist was standing next to him; he kept on babbling and babbling continuously.

“Are you listening to me?”

Changmin didn’t look up from his sketch, “Hmm?”

“I said, are you listening to me?” Junsu said in firmer tone.

This time the architect looked up and smiled, “Of course not.”

Junsu scowled. “Seriously man, I’m trying to knock some sense into you here. Studies show that protecting critical marine habitats -- such as warm-and cold-water coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves -- can dramatically increase fish size and quantity. Don’t you want to see and eat bigger fish?”

Now Changmin was interested. He thought about it for a moment and nodded, “I suppose I do want to eat bigger fish.”

The marine biologist visibly brightened, “Good! Then you must understand that we have to protect more marine habitats, not destroying them by turning beaches into housing area.”

Changmin rolled his eyes. They were back to this again. “Look, if you don’t understand me the first nine times since this morning, read my lips: I. Do. Not. Care. About. The. Ocean.”

“But you said you want bigger fish!”

The architect shrugged, “There are more ways to get bigger fish, like letting them grow a bit more before catching and chopping them up, maybe? We can always ask the fishermen to catch big fishes only anyway.”

Junsu narrowed his eyes. “I am sorry that I called you the biggest asshole I’ve ever met. I’m sure that there is at least one bigger, I just can’t remember.”

Changmin raised an eyebrow and looked at the other’s rear part. “At least I fit in figurative speaking, you fit that literally.”

Junsu’s hand immediately flew over his butt. “You did not just checking my ass!” he protested indignantly.

The architect shrugged, “Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. Anyway, I’m about to get a hotdog or something, so if you’ll excuse me.”

Junsu blinked at the sudden turn in conversation, “It’s 9.30 in the morning.”

“Yeah, they’ll be fresh.” With that, Changmin left the premises. He was actually not that hungry, but a thought of food always kept him moving. Besides, it gave him a perfect excuse to get away from the crazy scientist. Speaking of the scientist -Changmin turned around- he didn’t follow him this time. The architect shrugged, maybe Junsu was a vegetarian. Actually it was very likely seeing how the man loved environment so much.

Changmin shuddered; he himself would rather die than being a vegetarian.

**********************************

“I wonder, Choi Siwon-shi, why the sudden interest in this case?”

The lawyer cleared his throat uncomfortably, “I was very rude to you yesterday and I want to apologize.”

“Apology not accepted, now go away, I need to find a lawyer who won’t insult my books.” Kyuhyun moved to close the door. Seriously, what the hell this lawyer was thinking? Kyuhyun was reading a book this afternoon, perfectly happy spending his time all alone in the apartment when the doorbell suddenly rang. ‘Lo and behold: Choi Siwon stood outside in his hallway.

“No, wait!” Siwon put a foot to prevent the door from closing.

The novelist eyed the foot disgustedly and scowled, “What now?”

The look Siwon gave him turned into pleading and the lawyer said again, “Look, even if you don’t want to accept my apology, it doesn’t change the fact that you’re still being sued and obviously need a lawyer. And well,” he gave a casual shrug,”I believe I am one of the best out there.”

Kyuhyun just continued staring at Siwon’s foot and the lawyer dutifully removed it from the door. “I won’t ask for any payment,” Siwon hastily added.

Kyuhyun’s ears perked up. Now that caught his attention. Well, it wasn’t like he couldn’t afford to pay this man -no matter how good or expensive he said he was- but the idea of not spending money on such things seemed appealing. Besides, he could always use the money to buy another 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon to drink with Changmin later. Kyuhyun sighed in resignation and Siwon’s eyes glinted with a little bit of hope.

The novelist moved aside to let Siwon in while the lawyer skipped happily entering the other’s apartment.

“How do you know where I live anyway?”

Siwon looked away guiltily, “I tried asking Leeteuk but he seems pretty pissed at me and so Kangin decided to help. He mentioned he can get Leeteuk to tell him by using… persuasion skills I don’t want to know about,” he added with a shudder.

Kyuhyun blinked. “Sex?”

The lawyer flushed a bit but he nodded nonetheless. Kyuhyun rolled his eyes; trust Kangin to use sexual intercourse as a way to gain information.

An awkward silence settled in the room and Siwon then produced a book out of his briefcase. He held it out to the other and smiled, “By the way, I read your book and I think I understand why people want to plagiarize it. It has a very interesting storyline and the characters are very well-developed.”

Kyuhyun raised an eyebrow, “That’s not the one being subjected to plagiarism.”

Siwon’s smile dropped. “Oh…sorry.”

The novelist sighed. He walked towards a nearby bookshelf and picked out a novel. He shoved it towards the lawyer’s hand, “This one is. Read it carefully and compare it to that guy’s novel, I’m sure you can find similarities in them.”

The smile Siwon gave him was so bright Kyuhyun wished he wore sunglasses inside the apartment.

*************************

It was a calm, relatively peaceful afternoon in Seoul two days later. Kyuhyun was on his way to Changmin’s office. He was in the neighborhood and decided to visit his best friend, it had been two days since he last saw him. Hopefully the architect was in his office today.

Exiting the spotless mirrored elevator, the novelist was greeted with the sight of some of Changmin’s employee all quivering in one corner. Changmin’s secretary fortunately remained seated at her desk, but she somehow also looked very scared.

“What’s wrong?” Kyuhyun asked.

The secretary gazed back at him with obvious relief. “Kyuhyun-shi! Thank god you’re here!” she then continued in a much lower tone, “the boss is in a really bad mood. Can you come inside?”

“Isn’t your job is supposed to forbid guests from entering your boss’ office?”

“But you are not a normal guest, Kyuhyun-shi!” she happily replied, “you are the boss’ partner!”

Kyuhyun’s eyebrow twitched. Even Changmin’s perky secretary thought he was dating his best friend! Shaking his head, the novelist then knocked the door of said best friend’s office.

Changmin looked up from his huge mahogany desk. Papers scattered all over it, but the architect smiled widely seeing Kyuhyun entered the room. “Kyu, it’s been two days, huh? How are you?”

“I’m good,” Kyuhyun answered. Changmin didn’t seem to be in a bad mood, but it’d be better to ask him about it later. Right now he needed to talk about something else in order to distract the other. “I got a lawyer by the way, that Choi Siwon came to my apartment a couple of days ago. He said he was sorry and he wants to represent me.”

“That’s great! So what are you going to do next?”

“We haven’t discussed it yet,” Kyuhyun sat on the table, “I’m not worried though, there’s still plenty of time.”

Changmin nodded, absentmindedly noting that the novelist actually sat on one of the sketches he was working on, but he let his friend sit there anyway.

“So, what’s gotten into you? Your secretary was practically trembling when I passed her earlier. She said that you’re in a terribly bad mood,” Kyuhyun said again.

The architect sighed, “Remember that lunatic scientist I’ve told you about?”

“Marine biologist.”

“Whatever.”

“They’re different, Min. Scientist is a person who engages in a systematic activity or using a scientific method to acquire knowledge, while marine biologist is a person who study organism in the ocean or other marine or brackish bodies of water. So although technically marine biologist is also a scientist, they’re very different.”

Changmin glared at him and Kyuhyun smiled back innocently.

“Marine biologist, scientist, I don’t give a damn. The point is, that man is pissing the hell out of me.”

Kyuhyun didn’t say anything, fully aware that his best friend hadn’t finished talking. Sure enough, the architect continued his ranting, “he’s like this…plague I can’t get rid of. He’s everywhere you know, I’ve told the securities not to let him in, but somehow he’s there again the next day. Did I mention that he scared my developer away? I can’t even persuade the man to come back to the construction site, and he’s the developer for god’s sake!”

Changmin huffed, “Anyway, good luck on your case, Kyu. Let’s hope that Simon guy really knows what he’s doing.”

“Siwon.”

“What?”

“His name is Siwon, Choi Siwon.”

“Okay,” Changmin raised an eyebrow but he didn’t say anything else. Instead he stretched in his luxurious chair and nodded to his friend, “I’m going to Pulse tonight, you wanna come?”

The novelist shook his head, “Can’t, I’ve got a dateline. Maybe next week I’ll get drunk with you, but not tonight.”

Changmin shrugged, “Suit yourself. Now scoot away buddy, I need to finish this sketch.”
