Chapter 23

NYC, NY USA

“So, have you met him yet?” Ariel asked excitedly and looked around for any signs of a new face that she’d guess to be Toma’s friend from Japan. She raked her hand through her long, straight locks and reapplied her lip gloss. “Is he cute? How tall is he? What does he look like?” She continued to fire questions at Mackenzie. “Do I look presentable?”

“Don’t you have a boyfriend?” Mackenzie reminded her without looking up from her SideKick. She was chatting with Toma who was still in class, apparently bored to tears. She heard Ariel huffed in annoyance and stared at her. They were sitting on one of the benches in the quad located in the middle of the school. It was an ideal place to meet since it was approximately close to Toma and Mackenzie’s division buildings.

“Of course, I still love Chun,” she said seriously, but a mischievous grin formed her lips. “But I still like to see and admire guys, especially if they’re fine specimens.” She giggled. Mackenzie glanced at her sideways, shaking her head in disbelief. Her best friend would always be a flirt.

“Okay, Toma said that his class is finally over, and he’s heading this way,” Mackenzie reported, closing her phone. “Good thing I don’t have classes today. The professors have given most students practice times for recitals and such.”

“Well, I’m skipping mine,” Ariel said with a grin. “I haven’t skipped a class this semester yet. It’s tradition.”

“I can’t do such things,” Mackenzie sighed. “My mother apparently assigned some spies to track my attendance.” She continued to tell her friend about the phone conversation between them. Ariel listened sympathetically, knowing how Risa could be unreasonable sometimes.

Mackenzie’s eyes lit up suddenly, looking behind Ariel. She turned around and saw Toma heading their way with a cute, tall guy beside him. She gave the widest grin at them and stood up when the guys stopped in their midst.

“Konnichiwa,” Ariel greeted Shun excitedly and offered her hand. “I’m Ariel Lin, Toma’s best friend here America. Nice to meet you.”

“Hello, my name is Shun Oguri,” Shun replied in accented English, shaking Ariel’s hand. “Sorry. My English is bad.”

“No, it’s fine,” she said flirtatiously, grinning like an obsessed fangirl. Shun gave a polite smile back, but his eyes looked slightly frightened. Mackenzie noticed the look in his eyes, and stifled a snicker. She was about say something when Chun walked by and waved at them.

Ariel blushed guiltily, but luckily Chun didn’t notice anything. He called out to them that he can’t stay to chat since he was on his way to class, and asked Ariel to walk to class together. She sighed, turned to Mackenzie with a pout, and took her belongings. She skipped towards Chun and waved goodbye at her friends and Shun.

“So much for skipping her class today,” Mackenzie giggled as she watched them leave. Toma took the spot where Ariel had sat, and kissed Mackenzie hello.

“This is my friend, Shun,” he said, pointing at him. “Let’s talk in Japanese so he can understand, okay?”

Mackenzie looked up and smiled at Shun. He stood there motionless for a second before smiling back at her. Toma scooted over so he could sit beside Mackenzie.

“Hajimemashite, Mackenzie Wentz desu,” she said, offering her hand to Shun. “Doumo.”

Shun blinked and took her hand. “Hajimemashite,” he said, shaking it slowly. He stared at her, a soft smile on his face.

“Oi, are you flirting with my girl?” Toma frowned, asking in Japanese. He possessively wrapped his arms around her. “She’s mine, you know.” Mackenzie pushed his arms off from her and smiled apologetically at Shun, who laughed.

“Iie,” he shook his head. “It’s because she’s kirei.”

“Of course,” Toma agreed, kissing Mackenzie’s cheek and making her blush. “I have impeccable taste. So, I have the rest of the day free.” He got up and stretched looking at Shun. “What do you wanna see?”

“Time Square?” Shun shrugged, unsure if his suggestion was okay. Toma and Mackenzie nodded.

“Okay, let’s go,” Mackenzie got up on her feet and grabbed her belongings. Toma draped an arm around her shoulder while she placed her arm behind his back and around his waist and walked together in a close side-hug.

Shun was taken aback. He almost took her hand, forgetting that who he was looking at was Mackenzie, not Maki. When she had looked at him smiling, he was shocked that her smile was familiar and he had to remind himself that it wasn’t Maki. Everything about Mackenzie, with the exception of the glasses and fluent English, reminded him of his girlfriend who he missed terribly.

“Oi, hayaku,” Toma called to him. Shun didn’t realized that they had left him standing there while he thought about Maki, and ran to catch up.

##

“Why didn’t you guys call me that you were in Time Square?” Jun whined that night when they related to him their New York tour. “I was in the MTV building and could have asked you to come up.” He had invited them over at his apartment to hang out since he couldn’t be with them the whole day.

“You work for MTV?” Shun asked him excitedly. “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” He went and sat next to him. “Which celebrities did you interview? Oh, I bet you saw Britney Spears, right?” he looked at him eagerly, smiling widely at how lucky his friend is.

“He’s not a VJ,” Toma interrupted, annoyed how Jun managed to trick Shun by telling him half of the story. “He’s just a janitor.” He sat on the cozy armchair in Jun’s apartment and narrowed his eyes at them. Since when was Shun a Britney fan?

Shun shrugged. “Who cares? He could have seen celebrities, ne?” he said to him. Jun glared at Toma when he just shook his head.

“Well, when I get famous, I’ll see all the celebrities I want,” Jun growled. “Besides, this is just a part-time job between auditions and classes.”

Toma was about to say something when the doorbell rang, which Jun welcomed. It was Mackenzie at the door bearing snacks. She smiled at him and handed him the plastic bag full of food.

“What’s with the hairstyle?” Jun asked when he let her in. Mackenzie frowned at him. Her short bangs were held back with a pin on top of her head, making the hair spiked up. She patted her head consciously.

“Why? Do I look weird?” she asked and squeezed beside Toma in the tight space and practically sat on his lap.

“No, you look good,” Toma said when he kissed her cheek. “As always. Jun’s just jealous.” Mackenzie turned and kissed him on the lips. Shun looked at them with a smile while Jun groaned and mumbled something like, “there they go again.”

“Shun, I apologize for this cheesy moment brought to you by,” Jun paused and checked out the chips inside the bag of snacks. “Doritos Nacho Cheese. Huh! How appropriate.” He glanced in mock disgust at the still kissing couple before he turned to the kitchen to put the chips in the bowl.

“Sorry, Shun,” Mackenzie blushed and wiped the side of her mouth, looking at him shyly. Toma looked at him with a weird smirk as if he conquered something. Shun just chortled and shook his head. He totally understood. Maki had apologized the same way to Makiko last week. It amused him how the scene now mirrored what had happen a week ago.

Jun finally came back with the bowl of chips and four cans of soda. They devoured the food while watching a movie they had rented earlier. Luckily for Shun, he had seen it in Japanese and could follow the plot. After the movie, it was getting late, so Mackenzie had to leave. Toma insisted for her to stay, but she declined. She wanted to take pictures before she left, so the guys obliged to her request.

“Wait, I haven’t had a picture with Toma and Shun, yet,” Mackenzie said and handed her camera to Jun. She sat on Shun’s left while Toma sat on his right. They both gave peace signs at the camera. Shun smiled and looked at the camera, but his eyes wandered to the kitchen.

“Senno,” Jun clicked the camera, startling Shun.

“Oi, I wasn’t ready,” Shun exclaimed, but Mackenzie already got the camera and said goodbye went out the door.

Shun sighed and sank back into the couch. Toma sighed, looked away from the door and propped his feet on the cluttered coffee table. He accidentally knocked down a soda can, but he just stared at it and shrugged. Jun stared at him unbelievably and picked up the can. He then started to clean up, mumbling why his friends weren’t even lifting a finger to help.

“You missed a spot,” Shun pointed at the spotless table Jun had just wiped clean. He got a glare with a matching growl from him. Shun and Toma laughed when he left for the kitchen to clean up there.

“Her birthday’s next week, isn’t it?” Shun said knowingly to Toma once they were alone in the living room. Toma whipped his head at him in surprise.

“How did you know that?” he exclaimed, looking wide-eyed at him.

“My girlfriend’s birthday is next week, too,” Shun ignored his look and stared ahead. “I want to surprise her with something, but I didn’t know with what until now.” He turned to Toma with a glint of mischief in his eyes. “I know that you want to surprise Mackenzie with something, too, and I know just a thing. If you help me, I’ll help you.”

Toma, still slightly shock at how his friend guessed Mackenzie’s birthday, just slowly nodded his head in agreement. Shun came closer towards him and told him everything about the triplets.

The incessant ringing of his phone brought Yamapi out from the shower, still dripping wet. With annoyance, he didn’t bother to wrap a towel around his waist, and stomped to where he left the phone. He seriously needed to do some errands that morning, and the interruption was setting him back.

“Moshi, moshi,” he practically barked at the caller. “Oh, Aiba-tantei, doumo.” He winced at how he treated the detective and listened.

“Hontou?” he asked excitedly as he continued listening on what Masaki Aiba was telling him. “That’s great to know… Hai…. I’ll tell Makiko….arigatou gosaimasu.” He hung up the phone and lifted his arms up in victory. There was a knock at the door, so he hurried to answer it.

“Hey, Makiko,” he greeted his guest. “I was about to call you. How did you know I’d be here in Sho’s apartment?” He frowned when Makiko just stared at him. Well, actually, she was staring down at his body. He tilted his head in puzzlement, when he realized that he was completely naked and quickly covered himself with his hands before he ran back to the bathroom.

Makiko snapped out of the trance and walked in, closing the door behind her. She laughed to herself how that was the first time she’d seen him naked, and frowned if it was the last time, too.

“Hey,” Yamapi called to her a few seconds later. He had a towel wrapped around him this time, and leaned sideways on the doorpost of the bathroom as he crossed his arms. He looked seductively sexy posing like that that Makiko tried her best not to pounce on him.

“Uh, Sho told me, um, that, um, you were here and, uh, gave me directions, ahem, h-how… how to find his apartment,” Makiko stammered, trying not to stare at his pecs and abs.

“I see,” Yamapi nodded. “Hey, Aiba-tantei called. He said that the trial of your dad’s, I mean, of Yousuke’s men just ended. They’re in jail for a long time, and Jin is not going to bother you anymore.”

Makiko nodded her head and smiled, fighting back tears of relief. She went up to Yamapi and gave him a huge hug, but couldn’t hold the tears any longer and cried on his shoulder.

“It’s great news, isn’t it?” Yamapi asked in her ear as he hugged her back. She nodded, still clinging around his neck. “I have another great news.” He continued and cleared his throat. “Well, hopefully it’s great news.”

Makiko pulled back to look at him. “Nani?” she asked, looking up expectantly at him with watery eyes.

“I love you.”

There was pregnant pause as Makiko stared at him. She suddenly burst into tears and buried her face in her hands. Yamapi panicked and hesitated to touch her, biting his thumb as he thought of ways to console her. He had to go and opened his mouth! He reprimanded himself.

“Ha, ha. Gotcha!” Makiko suddenly stopped crying and laughed at him as he sighed with relief. She went closer and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“So, you’re not mad or sad?” Yamapi asked hesitatingly. She smiled and shook her head, still looking deep in his eyes.

“So, what brings you here anyway?”

“To give you this,” Makiko tiptoed, closing her eyes as she kissed him softly on the lips. Yamapi’s eyes widen before he slowly closed them as he kissed her back and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer.

“I have to go,” Makiko said a few moments later and pulled back from the kiss. She stared at his redden lips before she looked at his face. Yamapi smiled at her and nodded as he walked her to the door. She turned to him once they reached it and blinked in surprised.

“Nani?” Yamapi asked.

“You’re not going to insist for me to stay and have sex?”

Yamapi grinned and shook his head. “Iie,” he said and stroked her cheek lovingly. “It’s too soon. I want it to be the right place at the right time.” He gave a small laugh when Makiko just stared at him in amazement. “Makiko, I do love you.” He smiled as he looked in her eyes. “That’s why I’m willing to wait.”

“But I thought that when guys say “I love you’, they want to have sex?” Makiko looked at him in confusion.

“Who told you he loves you and then had sex with you?”

“Most of the guys I’ve been with,” Makiko replied and hung her head in shame.

“How long did each of them last?”

“Overnight,” she replied quietly, still looking down.

“Well, I want us to last.” Makiko snapped her head up and looked at him. “That’s why I’m willing to wait.”

Makiko walked out of the apartment and turned around and paused. She gave Yamapi another hug.

“Pi, I love you, too,” she said and kissed him. She smiled at him and turned in her heels. “Oh, by the way.” Makiko paused and called to him as he was about to get inside. “I’ll wait for you, too.” She waved goodbye and left.

Yamapi stared at the space where the girl he had been in love with, and just confessed to, had stood. He smiled happily and tried not to giggle like a little girl over his happiness. He had been through tough times with her, but it was all worth it. He went back inside, forgetting the plans he thought to do, and went back to bed to dream of Makiko.

Mackenzie unlocked the door of her apartment and went in. Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the kitchen light was on and clattering came from there. Mackenzie felt for the bust of Beethoven by the piano, and held it like a baseball bat as she tiptoed quietly to the kitchen. She saw the back of the intruder rifling through the utensil drawer, and she lifted the bust high over the head… then the intruder turned around suddenly.

“AHHHHHH!!!” Eiji and Mackenzie yelled at the same time when they saw each other face to face. The “intruder” was making himself a sandwich and couldn’t find the butter knife to spread the peanut butter.

“What the hell?” They screamed at each other in unison. “You scared the hell outta me!”

“You trying to kill me?” Eiji eyed the bust above her head, and Mackenzie brought it back down.

“I thought you’re a burglar or something,” she said defensively. “How was I to know you’d be here?” She eyed him suspiciously. “What are you doing in New York, anyway?”

She came up to him closer and narrowed her eyes. Eiji gulped and backed away slowly.

“Mom sent you, didn’t she?” Mackenzie interrogated, looking at him side-ways in suspicion.

“N-no…”

“Don’t lie!”

“Okay, okay!” Eiji held up his hands in defense, the sandwich dangerously closed to slipping. “She wants me to convince you to go next week to Tokyo for your birthday. They miss you.”

Mackenzie sighed. “But I want to spend my birthday with Toma, too,” she said. “He can’t afford to come with us.”

“Actually, dad anticipated that.” Eiji paused and took out an enveloped from his back pocket and handed it to her. Mackenzie opened it and her eyes widen and looked at him in shock.

“Yeah. He paid for both of you,” he replied to her silent question.

“Thank you!” She hugged him tightly before she ran to her room to tell Toma the news.

Eiji shook his head in amusement at his oneesan, and managed to scoop the dripping honey from his sandwich in his mouth just in time.
