Chapter 9
“So, who was that guy talking to you at the library the other day?” Shun asked Maki. They were lying in Shun’s bed, cuddling under the covers. Maki lifted her head and glanced at him.
“I thought I told you his name is Sho,” she replied.
“I know, but I mean, is he a friend of yours?”
“Yeah, sort of. Actually, I bumped into him, literally, by the way, about a month ago, but it was the first time we actually talk.” She raised an eyebrow at him and asked, “Why? Are you jealous?”
“No. I just wanna be friends with your friends, that’s all.”
Maki smiled and kissed him. “I gotta go,” she said, and started to get up. Shun grabbed her waist, and pulled her back close to himself.
“No, don’t,” he begged, kissing the nape of her neck. “Did you not want me to be friends with your friends?”
“What? No, it’s not about that. Of course I want you to be friends with my friends. It’s just that I need to go home and rest.”
“You can rest here,” Shun wasn’t letting her go, and nuzzled her neck deeper. “Please sleep over.”
Maki sighed, but relaxed. She intertwined her fingers with Shun’s and nodded. She turned to face him, and rested her head on his shoulder. Soon they were fast asleep.
##
The next morning, the sound of Ai Otsuka’s voice singing “Peach” woke Shun up. He groggily opened his eyes, and felt around for Maki, but he was alone in bed. He jolted up when he realized that, but the smell of fried eggs and steamed rice wafted in the room, letting him know that Maki was actually in the kitchen making breakfast. Shun sighed with relief and happiness as he plopped back on the bed. He had the best girlfriend in the world. He grabbed his boxers from the floor and put it on before going to the kitchen.
Maki’s back was toward him. She was wearing his dress shirt that barely covered her butt. Shun smiled at the vision in front of him. She didn’t hear him sneaking up behind her.
“Boo!” he said, wrapping his arms around her shoulders.
“AHH!” Maki yelped, and turned around to frown at him. “You scared me!” she chastised. “I could have splattered hot oil!” She looked angry, but Shun could see in her eyes that she was kidding. He quickly kissed her, taking in all her mouth deeply.
“Ohayou,” he said breathily, still kissing her. Maki pushed him off slowly.
“The eggs are getting burned,” she said, turning around, barely saving them to a crisp. She continued to prepare their breakfast while Shun went to take a shower. Maki brought the plates to the table, and found that she could hardly put them down because Shun’s work papers were covering the top. Trying to balance the plates while clearing the table, she accidentally knocked down a file folder, spilling the contents out. She set the plates on the kitchen counter, then started picking up the papers, and gasped. She noticed that one of the papers had her birthday on it, and started reading the form.
Just then, Shun got out of the room, already changed. He stopped abruptly when he saw Maki crouching on the floor, reading a paper.
“Babe, are you okay? What’s wrong?” he said as he crouched beside her.
“This adoption paper has my birth date on it,” she said, looking at him. She pointed on the paper. “See?”
“I know,” Shun sighed. He was trying to hide this information from her all this time. “I didn’t want to tell you about it because I don’t want you to get your hopes up.” He collected the other spilled papers, stuffing them back inside the folder. “They were at least two other girls with the same birthday,” he continued. “There were no pictures, so I can’t be sure which one could be your sister. Maybe she’s not even any of them.”
Maki nodded. “Wakaremashita,” she said. “Demo, I still want to help check them out, too. It wouldn’t hurt.” She took his hand to make him look at her. “Please, Shun?” she pleaded with her eyes. Shun sighed. He didn’t like it, but he reluctantly agreed. They finished up collecting the papers and ate breakfast. After Maki changed in her apartment, they headed for their schools.
Maki stepped off of Shun's Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle when they arrived at her school. She kissed Shun good-bye.
“I’ll go to the library and do some research, okay?” she said.
“Maki, I don’t want you to be disappointed if you can’t find her,” he said worriedly. Maki hugged him tightly.
“Daijoubou,” she assured him, she waved goodbye, and went to her class. She found Sho hanging out in the quad between classes later, and asked him to help her research in the library. He agreed, so they planned to meet up after lunch.

The smoky haze in the atmosphere made it hard for her to recognize the guy’s face, which was too close to hers. He appeared blurry in her vision, but she can see the outline of his face, and he was smiling smugly at her.
“Hey, hey,” he said as if to assure her, but something in his tone of voice gave her a feeling of dread instead. “Relax, will you? I thought you like this stuff. After all, you’ve been with a lot of men.”
He ran his hand down over her body from the shoulder, stopping at her thigh. She tried brushing his hand off of her leg, but he gripped it harder instead. “Whoa, what’s the matter?” he asked with a smile, but to her, he seemed ready to attack his prey. “Come on. My friends tell me you’re the easiest fuck in Tokyo.”
“Stop it,” she said, struggling to push him off, but he was determined to get what he wanted. She struggled under him, as he got more aggressive.
“Stop it!” she yelled fearfully. “Stop!”
Makiko gasped as she awoke from her nightmare. She hyperventilated for a moment, and put a hand over her heart to calm herself down. She sighed with relief. It had all been a dream. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed. How did she earn such a nasty reputation? She had asked herself that a million times. Why did she allow herself to sleep with so many men?
When she was fifteen, she was raped by one of Jin’s friend, Kame. Jin knew about it, and that destroyed their friendship, but he somehow blamed Makiko why he and Kame weren’t friends anymore. Yousuke was angry about the situation and for a while, he seemed to care and paid her so much attention. That affection soon lost its fizzle due to his “business,” and he slowly wasn’t involve with her life.
To get back at him, and subconsciously trying to get his affection back, Makiko threw herself to different men. At first, she had slept with most of the guys at her high school, especially the ones with girlfriends. After a while, that seemed to be “too easy” for her, so she played around with college guys.
The most thrilling for her, though, was sleeping with some of the younger members of her dad’s gang. She almost always wished that Yousuke would just find her in the middle of the act. Too bad for the man, but at least she’d get her father’s attention. That was why Yamapi had been the newest victim of her thrill, but somehow, he manages to slip out of her fingers in the last moment.
Makiko sighed. He hadn’t really spoken with her since that incident at the bar two days ago. All he did was taking her to places, but he never talked, unlike the other times before. Makiko felt guilty now that some guy had implied that she’s a slut in front of Yamapi. She pondered why she cared what he thinks anyway. He’s just some gang member her dad forced to take care of her. She actually missed the groans and complaints throughout the shopping trip, and his firm “no!” when she comes on to him.
She shook her head to clear any thoughts of Yamapi, and started to get up and get ready for school. After a shower and a change of clothes, she went down the hallway to her dad’s office. She was about to turn the knob, when she stopped and listened to the voices inside the room.
“You can’t possibly be serious,” she heard Jin asked angrily, trying not to shout. “She’s not qualified.”
“Why, because she’s a girl?” Yousuke replied sounding calm.
“No, cuz she’s not family.” There was a slight pause. Makiko frowned, her brows furrowed.
“Makiko is family. Did you forget she’s my daughter?” Makiko bit her lower lip. So they were talking about her.
“But she’s not blood,” Jin said firmly. Makiko covered her mouth with her hand to stifle the exclaim escaping her lips. What the hell was Jin talking about?
“How do you know about this?” Yousuke asked with a tone sounding threatening. Makiko heard him got up from a chair and walked to Jin. “Who told you?”
“From the others,” Jin replied, oblivious of the tone in Yousuke’s voice. “She’s not even legally adopted since she was kidnapped from her mother at the hospital.”
“What else do you know?””
“You killed her father the same day, before you went to the hospital to take her.” There was a loud crash from behind the wall. Makiko cracked the door slightly and saw a glimpse of Jin knocked down on the floor, his nose bleeding, but his eyes glared angrily at Yousuke. She sobbed quietly at what she had heard.
“If you ever mention this to her or to anyone, I’ll have you killed, understand?” Yousuke shout. “I don’t give a fuck if you’re my nephew!” Jin just glared at him, but nodded, submitting to his orders.
Makiko quickly and quietly turned around and ran from the scene. She dialed Yamapi’s number as she got in her car, backed out of the driveway, and sped towards the school.
“Pi? It’s me,” she sobbed into the phone as soon as Yamapi answered. “Can I meet you before class? In the parking lot, okay?”
“What’s wrong?” Yamapi asked, alarmed that she’s crying. He quickly kicked the covers off of him and sat up.
“Just meet me, and I’ll tell you,” she said before hanging up. Yamapi quickly got dressed, then headed to the school in his motorcycle.
He found her car moments later, and approached it. She didn’t see him coming, and was startled when he knocked softly on the window. She motioned for him to go to the passenger side, and get in. He did so, and as soon as he sat down, Makiko suddenly cried.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, but was a bit hesitant when he patted her shoulder. He wondered if this is an act to lure him to her. Instead of flinging herself to him as he had expected, she just shook her head and cried in her hands.
“Everything,” she said in a muffled voice that Yamapi barely heard. He realized that it wasn’t an act, so he wrapped his arms around her to console her cries. He didn’t say anything, just letting her cry in his arms. After a while, she pushed herself out from his grasp, and stopped crying long enough to relay to him what she had heard. Yamapi frowned.
“I can’t believe that son of a bitch!” he yelled angrily. “What kind of a person would just kill another? Why would he do such a thing?”
Makiko glanced at him sideways. “Pi, my dad’s a yakuza,” she reminded him. “Of course he’d do such a thing. You’re in his gang, too, you know.”
Yamapi sighed. “I know, is just that…” he paused, thinking. “I’d never thought that…” He sighed as he realized what he got himself into. He looked at Makiko. “So, what are your gonna do?” he asked.
Makiko shrugged. “I know for sure I’m not going back there ever. I can’t believe all this time…” her voice trailed, choking back a sob that was forming in her throat. Yamapi grabbed her in a protective hug again.
“Will you help me find out about my parents?” she asked, looking in his eyes. Yamapi gave her a reassuring smile and nodded his consent. They didn’t bother to go to any of their classes, and after they ate lunch, they headed straight for the library.
##
Yamapi carried a stack of old newspapers that dated back to 1985. They occupied one of the study rooms in the library for privacy. The rooms had one window that people can look in to see if the room is occupied or not. Next to the window was the door to enter and exit the room. Each room had a table that almost took all the space and chairs.
Makiko was already in there to reserve the room. She sat behind the door where no one down the hall to the other rooms could see her. Yamapi took the chair oppose hers, in front of the window where he could be seen from the check-out counter.
“Douzo,” Yamapi said as he handed her half of the stack. Makiko started browsing through the first one. Yamapi sat down and started on his half.. He flipped through the pages but couldn’t find anything.
Between exchanging newspapers, he looked up and saw Sho standing between the bookcases, apparently doing some research. Yamapi slightly panicked because he didn’t want Sho to see Makiko and have him ask unnecessary questions.
“Psst,” he called to Makiko, who looked up at him strangely. “Hide,” he mouth out the word.
“What?” she asked, and started to get up. Yamapi quickly got up to stop her, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw that Sho had seen him. He quickly pushed Makiko’s head down to the floor out of Sho’s line of vision.
“Stop struggling and stay still,” Yamapi said through the side of his mouth. He waved innocently at Sho with his other hand.
Yamapi smiling strangely at him and waving like that made Sho wondered what he was up to. He was about to go over to him, when he realized that Maki had gone way ahead of him, oblivious that he trailed behind. Not wanting to lose her, Sho waved back at Yamapi, and motioned that he had to go. He quickly ran to catch up to Maki.
Yamapi sighed with relief, but groaned out in pain when Makiko pinched his leg. He let go of her head, and she shot up angrily. Yamapi waved his arms in defense.
“Chotto matte,” he begged. “I just saw someone I know that you don’t care to know. He can be Japan’s biggest gossip, and if he tells people about you and me, then I’m sure one way or another, it’ll go to Yousuke. He’s that big of a blabber mouth.” He lied.
Makiko glared at him. “Whatever. Just don’t do that ever again,” she said through gritted teeth. Yamapi nodded, and they both went back to their research without any more interruption.
