Snowy Saturday

It snowed today! Finally - after a winter that’s been acting much more like spring, we woke to four inches towering on the porch railings, a backyard transformed, and yet more snow swirling through the air in blizzardlike gusts. Sadly, my favorite tree - the immensely old and tall one sheltering the border between ours and our neighbor’s yard, that ( Read more... )

That sounds like the best snow day ever!

When it finally snowed here (enough to sled on) it was at night and all the kids had to go to bed cause it was a school night, which meant that Ryan and I had fresh snow in the park all to ourselves! We went 11:00 sledding in the hilly park. Unfortunately we just have rectangular foam like sleds (I really miss the saucers), but it turns out it is really fun to stand on the foam ones and try to snowboard down (and I will say, I was successful with that twice in a row, the entire length of the hill. I feel very accomplished). Then we made snow cones with rootbeer (SOOOO good! The natural snow is extremely delicious and a perfect texture).

I want to make spring rolls! Let me know if you figure out a good recipe. Also, that layered apple pie looks delicious . . . I don't like regular apple pie but I think I would like the wonton layers.

I think you would definitely like the wonton layers, knowing your aversion to pie crust. Jeremy even likes to eat them on their own as cookies (the cinnamon sugar versions). I'm not much of a fan of apple pie either, so I was surprised when these ended up tasting so good ( ... )

I think I'm too prone to bad circulation and freezing to really enjoy playing in the snow but that did sound fun.

I've made Pioneer Woman's Chicken Tortilla Soup lots of times, it is really good. I love chicken tortilla soup.

Apple pie is pretty much one of my favorite pies ever. I'm appaled neither of you like them. Seriously though, I always have to have apple pie during the holidays.

I imagine for me it's probably more a case that I haven't had many truly delicious apple pies or opportunity to taste them, since our family has always been a pumpkin pie family. I suppose I should bake one one of these days and give it another chance.

I've actually never liked pumpkin pie very much though the rest of my familiy loves them. Truth be told if I want an apple pie for the holiday feasts I have to be proactive and make it myself because everyone else is apathetic. So...I guess it's more of a just me thing. They're definitely more time intensive than pumpkin pie and it's important to use the right kinds of apples (last time I used a mackintosh mixed with honeycrisps and a fuji. It turned out pretty good though I do like plain granny smiths if you're doing a la mode. The sourness balances out the sugar of the ice cream but it has the potential not to have enough juice). I'm still trying to figure out how to make a good pie crust, they're tricky buggers.
