Current Events (with a side of Facebook)

Jul 14, 2013 18:26

I've been following the news lately, so I'm well aware of the various things that have been at the forefront the past few days. I just... am not in a place where I want to even think about discussing said things, hence the not mentioning them or commenting on other people's posts. Mostly because I know that I sometimes have trouble having ( Read more... )

I have to tread carefully with FB and even in RL since I actually do live in TN. *G*

My family is overly conservative with a decent dose of Tea Party conspiracy theories that they like. Much to their dismay, I am a liberal atheist Dem. Of course, they tried to reform me, bring me back and all that. They soon realized that it was pointless.

I don't blame you for the unfriending on FB. Once it gets personal like that, then what's the point of having them as friends? If anything, at the very least they can respect the differing opinions.

They must be pretty damn weak in their arguments if they can't handle differing opinions.

My family started trying back when I was still in college, and they kicked it into high gear once I moved to Maryland. Three-and-a-half years later, and they've yet to actually realize that it's pointless. :-/

I mean, it's one thing to say "hey, I don't agree with you on this for religious reasons." (And that's almost always the reason they give.) It's something else entirely to say "how stupid can you be? you're going straight to hell, you evil sinner for having a different opinion than me."

I have very strong feelings about my right to unfriend on Facebook. It's my Facebook account and what I want to look at is my choice. And yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don't have to read it everyday. And really, it doesn't make a difference to them if I'm reading their crap or not. It only makes a difference in how annoyed I am. But I have control over that. Someone telling you that they are insulted they unfriend is the ultimate disrespect of your boundaries and reaffirms the fact they deserved to be unfriended.

I was about to comment that you shouldn't be afraid to state your opinion just because someone doesn't agree with you. Then I realised that you did just that by unfriending these people. You give your opinion in your own way. :) Maturity is accepting people for who they are, not what they believe.

Thanks, and I think you're right to withhold comments for now. That's just what I am doing.

Ugh, the in-your-face small minded are so annoying. :(

I wish for your sake that your family would give up on trying to control you, but I know that's how lots of families are (mine, too, in some members).

*hugs*
