Chapter One - The New Store
Jaejoong stood in front of a small building proudly. His chest wasn’t puffed up, but anyone who saw him would be able to tell that he was-it was the twinkle in his eyes. The building had a wide sliding door, and an equally big sign. It read ‘Kim Bakery’.
The shop was small, as it was a newly established building. It only had a couple of tables for two and two shelves to display the baked goods. There was a rattan basket at the side for long breads such as the French breads, and to the other side of the shelves was a cash register. The place looked cozy and homey and Jaejoong nodded his approval at the choice of decor.
“So, what do you think of it?” Yoochun joined Jaejoong outside. “Like my work?”
“Of course,” Jaejoong said with a chuckle. “You’re a good designer.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Two young men stood in front of a small, newly-opened cafe. The taller one puffed his chest up in pride while the shorter one smiled along with him.
“So, what do you think, Jae-ah?”
“It’s a nice place. I’m sure people will like it.”
“Of course! I’m good, aren’t I?”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yoochun smiled proudly as he stared at his handiwork. “Well, customers will start coming anytime soon, I hope. Changmin has given all the flyers away.”
“Yeah, I just hope we don’t look too cheap for using plain paper,” Jaejoong said in worry.
“Nah, they know we’re a new shop. They can’t expect us to give them high-quality paper for flyer,” Yoochun said as he wrapped an arm around Jaejoong’s shoulders.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Jaejoong agreed. “I’m just worrying unnecessarily.”
“Hey, it’s understandable,” Yoochun said. “After all, you did spend your saving on this. I really hope we can be a success, just like a long time ago.”
Jaejoong smiled as he patted Yoochun’s cheek. Yoochun was an adult now, but he simply couldn’t break the habit, and Yoochun and Changmin never once complained.
“Alright, let’s go prepare the dough for tomorrow,” Jaejoong said. “Once Changmin returns he can take care of the store front.”
Once the two walked inside, two figures who had been lurking in the shadow watching their exchange stepped out. They were a young man and a young woman, both had dark hair and were wearing sunglasses to hide their faces.
“So this is the place,” the woman commented. “He’s a strong person, isn’t he? I’m glad to see he finally gets up again after what has happened in the past.”
“Indeed,” the man agreed. “I really don’t know what that stupid guy is thinking. Why would he spend money on them now, and not then when they needed it most?”
“Remember, we’re not to give the money to them directly. We’re to help their business by buying a lot of stuff from them,” the woman reminded. “As for that stupid guy... well, I guess he just wants to repent for what he has done.”
“I suppose,” the man said. “We shall come back here after lunch. That would be a good time.”
“Have you heard any more news from the stupid guy?”
“The stupid guy has a name you know.”
“And yet you keep referring him as the stupid guy.”
The man snorted. “No, I’ve not heard anything from him. However, I think he said he’s returning to Korea with his family.”
“The in-law too? Gosh I hate that woman.”
“Hey, don’t badmouth her. We’re still paid by them.”
“Tch. Fine, let’s go, Yonghwa. Don’t want them to see us yet.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, Young-ie.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Welcome!” Changmin greeted happily and bowed at the customers. He tended to each and every customer personally, helping them choose which kind of bread they wanted as well. When the store got crowded, Yoochun walked out of the kitchen and helped with customer service.
After the crowd had died down a bit, a young girl with long dark brown hair curled in ringlets entered the shop. The two turned their heads and were stunned by her beauty, but quickly looked away when a man came in behind her, glaring at them.
“Yonghwa-yah, quit it,” the girl said as she shook her head. “Hello! We’re here to buy dinner rolls, enough to feed twenty people.”
“Twenty?” Yoochun asked in surprise.
“Dinner after staff meeting,” Hayoung said easily, smiling at them charmingly. “Please pack them up while we browse through the rest.”
The two looked around and Hayoung nearly drooled when she saw the chocolate tart. She bought five of them and Yonghwa raised an eyebrow at her, which was replied by her sticking her tongue out at him. He also got some croissant and a French bread.
“Here you go,” Changmin said as he handed them all their purchases and their change. “Please come again.”
“Oh, I know I will,” Hayoung said with a cheeky grin. She took out a chocolate tart from the paper bag and nibbled on it as they walked out of the store.
Jaejoong walked out of the kitchen after he was done making the dough for the next day.
“Well, I’d say we had a good day today,” Changmin commented. “And if those two could become our regular customer, that’s even better. It seems like they might have to feed many people regularly.”
“Why? What happened?” Jaejoong asked curiously.
“A couple just walked in and bought dinner rolls to feed twenty people, said there’s a dinner after a staff meeting,” Yoochun said. “Yeah, I agree that we had a good day today. Hopefully it’ll continue for months to come.”
They chatted on as they closed the shop and went upstairs to their home to prepare and eat dinner. They talked about plans for the store in the future, but they agreed that they’d have to wait and see to really tell what their future plan should be.
“It’s enough for me as long as it’s a good source of income and I can pay for your studies,” Jaejoong said. “You haven’t finished your last year at university, and I want you to finish it.”
“We will,” Changmin said as he held onto Jaejoong’s hand. “Please don’t worry about us.”
“Yeah. You’re a good person, Jae,” Yoochun said. “The Goddess of Fate will bless our business.”
“I sure hope so,” Jaejoong said. “She did once, but we fell from grace. I don’t know if she will help us again.”
“You’re wrong,” Changmin interrupted. “He fell from grace. You didn’t.”
“Children, it’s okay,” Jaejoong said, sighing. “Do not hold grudges against him for as long as you live. How can you life if you can’t forgive and forget?”
“We’re not as forgiving as you are,” Changmin said, “but we promise we’ll try.”
“Yes, for you we’ll try,” Yoochun reluctantly agreed.
“Chun, I know he hurts you by taking Junsu away,” Jaejoong said softly, “and you, Minnie, because he took Jessica away. But you have to forgive him. Who knows you might meet them again someday.”
The two young men stared at each other, but smiled at Jaejoong, as if to humour him. They continued on with their quiet dinner and then cleaned up and prepared to go to bed.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“So they’re opening a bakery, you say?”
“Yes. They sell nice tarts.”
“Good to hear. I assume the plan will be able to go smoothly and undetected.”
“For now, yes. I’m sure they’ll think we become a regular customer because of their products. Not that they’re bad. They’re good, actually. The staff likes it very much too.”
“Good, good.”
“So when are you coming back to Korea?”
“We’re coming next week. Do you think it’s too soon?”
“Hey, your life is your own. I can’t dictate how to live your life.”
“But you could give me suggestions and guidance.”
“You didn’t listen to me back then.”
“You were six!”
“Well...”
“I know I was wrong, but what can I do? I’m not saying I don’t love my wife, because I do. I think.”
“You think? Seriously?”
“I don’t know. I mean, well, I just don’t know.”
“It’s okay. We’ll figure it out later, okay? Come meet us when you come back here.”
“Of course. See you, Hayoung-ah.”
“Bye, Yunho.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong lay in his bed, staring at the plain white ceiling and contemplating life. It had been fifteen years since he and his husband separated, and Yoochun and Changmin have grown into fine young men.
Fifteen years since he was betrayed by the person he trusted the most. Fifteen years since the arrival of the evil, plotting woman, who ensnared his husband with her sweet lies and wrapped her fingers around him.
Jaejoong sighed. He really should start practicing what he preached. How could he expect Yoochun and Changmin to forgive Yunho if he couldn’t forgive that woman?
With another sigh, he turned in his bed and fell into a restless sleep, dreaming of the days long gone.
End of Chapter One
And that’s it! Hope you like it and hope I did the plunny justice :DDD if you do, please leave a comment~ you know I’m always a comment whore :P maybe then I can work faster to get the next chapter out.
As suggested by the finishing line of this chapter, the next one will mostly deal with their past, to provide background story for what has happened and has been talked about in this chapter.
