Edit: Updated 06/03/07 with official lyrics.
I've been listening to the concert rips of Kanjani 8's new solo songs, and I thought I wanted to transcribe/transliterate/translate some of them. But I had to be picky, just because the quality of the files weren't the best thing ever because they're a live recording.
So I decided to do "Ruwa" by Subaru, since that one was fairly easy to hear compared to some of the other songs. I might do some other songs later, but this is the one I chose for now.
And as a warning, I have to say that I had a hard time translating this song. Not because it has big words or anything, but because it seems like a highly contextual song where the meaning of the lyrics could be taken a number of different ways. It's one of those songs you'd really have to talk to the lyricist to fully understand the complete meaning.
And obviously, I won't be talking to Subaru anytime soon, so I hope I did it some justice after I mulled over it.
Oh, and these lyrics are subject to change, especially when the album is released and I'll actually have the full lyrics. Also, I only did the main part, and did not transcribe the last part where Subaru is basically just singing a few words here and there from the chorus, because that part was a little hard to hear and I didn't know if he was improving it or if it's actually a part of the main lyrics. So we shall see. Updated with official lyrics! However, the translation is always subject to a little tweaking.
This song really strikes me as Subaru singing about himself. For example, there's a line that says "The skin I engraved for the radiance of the past", and I strongly feel this refers to his tattoo. So I felt it was a very personal song.
First, some notes before the actual lyrics and translations.
Notes on Ruwa
The title 琉我 (Ruwa) is not an actual word. "Ru" is not a commonly used word. Some say it means "deep blue", others "treasure". "Wa" is "self". That much is easy. But what meaning Subaru intended with the title is unclear.
Also, there is a part in the chorus "fusagikome ba". "Fusagikomu" means "depressed", but literally, it means something along the lines of "shut away".
By now, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that this song is written and sung from a female point of view. Or it at least uses female words.
Now onto the lyrics.
Ruwa (琉我) - Original Kanji Lyrics
Ruwa - Romaji Lyrics
Mata hi ga ochita
Nani wo nozomu
Nani wo utau
Kokoro hayabaya to
Love
Asu wo motomu
Ima wo utau
Waga iro ni kokoro wo yosete
Kako no kagayaki e kizanda hada mo
Afuredasu ima ni utaeba kokoro oyogeru no
Fusagikome ba kotoba nagareru kara
Okubyou mo tsuyogari mo dakishimeru wa
Hayasugiru no nani mo mienai wa
“Nantonaku” sonna mono morosugiru wa
Demo mou oku ni atatteru wa
Ima no kagayaki e kawaranu kokoro wo
Mitasanai de demo hanarenai de kokoro yogoreteku
Fusagikome ba kotoba nagareru kara
Okubyou mo tsuyogari mo dakishimeru wa
Hayasugiru no nani mo mienai wa
“Nantonaku” sonna mono morosugiru wa
Demo mou oku ni atatteru wa
Ruwa - English Translated Lyrics
The fire has deteriorated again
What do you desire?
What do you sing?
Your heart in such a haste
Love
Desiring tomorrow
Singing for the present
Drawn to the color of mine
To the skin I engraved for the radiance of the past
It overflows, if I sing it now, can my heart stay afloat?
Because when depressed, the words flow
The cowardice, the bold front, I’ll embrace it all
It’s too fast, so much that I can’t see anything
“Somehow”, such a thing seems too frail
But it’s already hitting my depths
To the heart unchanged by the radiance of the present
Don’t satisfy me, but don’t leave me, my heart becomes unclean
Because when depressed, the words flow
The cowardice, the bold front, I’ll embrace it all
It’s too fast, so much that I can’t see anything
“Somehow”, such a thing seems too frail
But it’s already hitting my depths
