Saturday was Rememberance Day (Veteran's Day in the U.S.), a day in which we remember the sacrifices made by the members of our armed services during various wars. Not too harsh at all.

We don't get a public holiday for November 11. We have small ceremonies, and a minute's silence, but that's it. There was barely any media coverage this year, which was a bit poor. We have a public holiday on Anzac Day (April 25) - if Anzac Day falls on a weekend, we get a weekday off, too.

I don't so much have a problem with November 11th being a stat holiday - I agree that the argument could be made that it is an important enough event to warrant a full day of reflection/respect (although I suspect that it would not end up getting treated as such, but that's just human nature). What irks me the shifting of this particular holiday: it's not "we close down one day in November to honour those who fought for our freedoms", it's "we close down on November 11th to honour..." When November the 11th falls on a Saturday, we are still perfectly capable of remembering and honouring our fallen, whether we have a day off from work or not. To take the following Monday off just seems so, "Heyyyy, where's my free holiday ( ... )

Well, obviously, with all of us doing all our banking online they're stressed about losing their job and need the day to relax...not like the rest of us freaking drones.. *g*
