Fic Rec: Adventures In Babysitting

Dec 19, 2008 07:58

Okay, when I said I wasn't reccing any more hd_holidays fics until after reveals, I, uh, lied. Sorry, I'm just too enthusiastic about this fic! So reccing one more.

Adventures in Babysitting (NC-17, 18,000 words--but it feels much shorter! The fic flies by ( Read more... )

you know, this story has everything i love in h/d fic--a creative and vivid setting, an intriguing plot, harry and draco secretly attracted to one another, etc. even ron and hermione were fabulous. and yet, i didn't like the story as much as i would. i think it's because i never saw any real affection or care between harry and draco. sure, there was ust and that was resolved but i didn't feel there was much emotional investment. and i thought harry was an ass for shagging draco and then leaving the next day, godfather ceremony or not [i was half-expecting ginny to tell harry he was an idiot for leaving draco in iceland, but then that didn't happen]. i'm probably just a hopelessly romantic sap :p

Hmm...the story definitely ended with the relationship still in early stages, but I thought it (their relationship) had a lot of promise. I get what you mean, with wanting to see more affection and romance (I am a romantic sap too, haha), but I think this Harry and Draco weren't quite there yet ( ... )

i agree with everything you said--it was definitely clear that they respected each other. i guess i just felt there was very little in the way of physical affection. i don't think they touched at all aside from that one kiss and shag. maybe there will be more of it as time goes on, but i guess i like to see some of that in the early stages of their relationship as well.

if you like tent sex, i hope you read rurounihime' world's edge!

Yeah, I love seeing physical affection, but I think I might have found it OOC before the point in their relationship the fic ended at--the fic really seemed to be about how their relationship began, so it ended right as they agreed to, you know, pursue one. Hmm... I actually imagine there might be some tentative/affectionate touching on their upcoming date. We will have to ask the author about that after reveals, hahaha.

Oh, that sounds awesome! I love her Arrangement series, but don't know if I've read that one yet!

I'm only halfway through the story and really need to go to bed now, but I'm giggling like a loon here. There are plenty of elements I probably wouldn't like in a "serious" fic, but since this story has just the right touch of crackyness, I love it to pieces so far. Thank you for the rec, I look forward to reading the rest of the fic! :)

Yay! I'm glad you are enjoying it! :D

(And thank you for commenting to say so. I would hate for my rec post to end up chasing readers away. I'm sure there are tons of people who are just as in the mood for a fic like this--light, fun, and clever--as I was.)

You know, I started reading it and couldn't help but be distracted by the Iceland, because I kept thinking about how those poor Icelanders must still be all depressed because of their major banking collapse and the worthlessness of the krona and all...but maybe I'll go and give it another try. ;D

LOL! Well if you do, I hope you enjoy it! :) We can always imagine that the wizards of Iceland were not as strongly affected, I suppose. ;)

Thanks for reccing this, I might have missed it otherwise. Do you agree that it's likely to have been written by Anna Fugazzi? I base this only on a hunch, but it seems to fit. On the other hand, I've no idea if she even is participating in this year's fest...

I skimmed the comments above, but I just wanted to say that one of my favorite things about the fic was that Harry's infatuation lacked fluff. He wasn't in love Malfoy, he was just intensely interested and attracted to him. I get tired of stories where lust and interest is too easily conflated with true love.

Yay, glad you enjoyed it! And hahaha, I think I'll hold off on any speculation until the end of the fest. :D

Yeah, I agree, it bothers me when they fall in love too quickly.

She's pinch hitting I believe.

I suspected Anna as well because of the setting, and mythology and the little links at the bottom. It is slightly more cracky and snarky than her latest stuff, but it has that gradual development of feelings I love about her stuff. Still I didn't get that Anna feel. It's like all evidence points it should be her, but I just don't feel right about that guess.

Well, she's always the hardest one to pinpoint in a fest for me anyways.

I really enjoyed the fic. It was a curious blend of setting a pretty romanticized bud of a relationship between Harry and Draco (like it was pointed out earlier - respect and desire) against something edging very close to crack in everything around them. I thought the mix was very refreshing and worked really well.

I know what you mean about the almost-crack. In some ways it reminded me of Charlotteschaos' Gay Aurors... I somewhat expected the volcano god's ceremony to include Harry and Draco fucking each other.

Another indicator that this wasn't Anna's is that she recced it in her journal today.
