You guys, Pauline Baynes passed away.  If you know who that is.  She was the illustrator for C.S. Lewis' Narnia books and several of Tolkien's stories (including Farmer Giles of Ham).  Her illustrated map of Narnia is famous.  One of my childhood memories is when my dad would read us The Chronicles of Narnia before we went to bed, and we'd always ( Read more... )

I feel a little terrible about the fact that my reaction to your first item was "Wait, Pauline Baynes was still alive until recently?" But oh, that's sad, still. Her illustrations of "Farmer Giles" simply made the story.

Oh, they totally do. Comic pictures in a faux-medieval style are so completely perfect.

I do have a secret hope that her passing away will somehow inspire someone to release a collection of her work. It'd be more fun than trying to chase down illustrations through various books. And I don't have any of her color ones.
