[Well, returning relatively uninjured from the draft means a few days of adjustment (mostly running around and visiting injured friends, picking up various beasts, fighting off nightmares, ect) until Katara returns to her routine. That means that after school, it wouldn't be at all inconceivable for her to bump into her favorite ninja(s?) as town is where the errands are.

She hasn't checked in on Chouji, Shikamaru, or Temari since as far as she knew, they were all fine. And she hadn't even realized how much she'd missed seeing Chouji until she sees him - and instantly smiles and waves, rushing over to where he is.]
