Furniture Rehab: Stripping Wood Stool Legs

Aug 31, 2010 11:29

lepapillonvert asked me to share this over here (originally from my blog) since it might help out some DIYers in this neck of the woods.

I recently found this mid-century stool at an estate sale and my husband finagled it down to $5. We of course took it home and I have set out to peel away the layers of grime and dated finishes to make it lovely again.

This is great, very helpful! And I like the stool, it's a nice find. I hope you'll post the finished project.

Suggestion: I don't know how smooth the stain made the wood, but you could wax the legs with furniture wax (a clear bee's wax based wax works best) to give them a soft shine. It makes them easier to dust too. ^_^

It's on my list of things to pick up on my next trip to the hardware store. I just did a desk too and it needs a coat of wax for sure.

...People dust chairlegs? I feel domestically challenged now. I've never dusted a chair leg in my life.

Well I guess that's more something to note if you plan to do a tabletop of some sort.

Really? I didn't have any issues with it. What don't you like about it?

Hm. The smell didn't bother me. I did everything outside though, so none of the smells were very strong. I don't feel comfortable working on any projects like this in our tiny apartment.

Making a note about the extra step though. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this post.
I recently bought a hideously painted dresser for my son's room and my first attempt to strip it was a disaster because I didn't know what I was doing.

I now know what I am doing this week. :)

Take it all with a grain of salt. This is just my story. Haha. Every piece is different and I am no expert.

Either way it has to be a step in the right direction from where I started.

Very true. It can be done by a novice! ^_^
