Countdown to destruction...

I'm kind of checking in and out of the news thread and a handful of people have brought up the question as to whether or not LJ made some kind of contractual deal with FB & Twitter to push users towards these other services. And now LJ is in a tight spot, legally speaking, because their customers are clearly screaming DO NOT WANT and packing up in ( Read more... )

It may also be the case that "corporate" has decided that shipping comments to Facebook and Twitter is the wave of the future and a way to keep LJ new and fresh and on the cutting edge and they're unwilling to give in.

It is a very common trait of corporate thinking that they know better than their customers. The never heard "the customer is always right".

Odd that they would, because in truth, Facebook in particular is, in my mind, a certain level of competitor. I've seen people ditch their LJ in favor of Facebook, etc.

What validation to those that are commenting have to imply this? Because really, unless there's something out there that proves it without a doubt, I'd throw that into the "stupid drama rumor" category.

I smell conspiracy theory mongering. Sometimes corporate decisions are just stupid and slow to be undone.

It was speculation, so no validation. But it has a ring of truth to it, because this sort of cross platform corporate gladhanding is rarely done without contracts involved.

It's certainly plausible that there is *some* sort of deal, and not merely conspiracy theory. But I'm guessing the comment feature was just something that came along with the let's make it easy for the FB people to come BACK to read mentality...

Someone gave me a DW code and I'm trying it while keeping the LJ for a bit.

Would you mind giving those of us new to Dreamwidth a clue on how to find our old LJ friend there?

Facebook & Twitter don't make deals that require specific types of services or content sharing. Think about it: They don't need to. They are the 8,000lb. gorillas in the room. They are where everyone else wants to be. They can just sit back & let third parties come to them, begging to share their measly content on FB/Twitter's platforms ( ... )

Thank you for your insider opinion. Howerver, I've never said it would "solve" anything by moving to Dw, fwiw.

I just suspect that DW & every other tiny site will eventually need to add ads, sponsorships, integrations w/the rest of the big o' Internet, etc., or whatever else pisses off ppl that LJ is doing. Bec. such is the way of the business world.

Like most companies, LJ started off as a small project by a guy wanting to create some neat online features. Yahoo!, Facebook, Google, most everybody started off that way. And they, hey, we can make this into a real job! Cool. Except there are tradeoffs for both the ppl inside the company & for the users.

If you need a DW code, let me know. I believe that I have at least one left.

ETA: Oh, look! You have a couple already. Heh.
