Ah honey, I'm so sorry. I never know the right words to say when someone has died in the service of their job, either. I can't possibly imagine that it makes the grief of those left behind any the less to know that the one who died knew the risks beforehand.

It's always sad when there is one less hero in the world. Your family and his are in my prayers tonight.

the e-note to sis does sound like the best idea in this case
and maybe a little something to the charity of choice for the fallen comrade, when sis can tell you the group of choice.
