Heh, it's easy to articulate why Meiglan is annoying: she's a stereotypical Pretty, Fragile, Dependent Little Girl, with little personality beyond that, and Pol decides he needs to be the Big Strong Man and protect her instead of going for actual romance [*cough*Sionell*cough*] and not having a twit for a father-in-law. >_>
Pol has some pretty severe Daddy Issues that I don't think he ever really worked out. Honestly, I tended to sympathize with Andry more, probably because I wanted to punch Pol in the face a lot. Idiot.
I never finished Dragon star-- I only got through the first book. Really, I prefer the first two Dragon Prince books. (Although rereading Sunrunner's Fire made me request Andry/Pol smut. Cause I'm a perv that way.) But from what I hear she really should do a third trilogy-- I mean, where does Pol go from there?
END-OF-DS SPOILERS IN THE THIRD PARAGRAPHsariel_diOctober 19 2007, 20:47:51 UTC
[nodnodnod] And while it's entirely understandable to have Daddy Issues when your dad is as awesome as Rohan (. . . yes, I still have a huge crush on him), there's a certain degree of twit-ness that . . . yeah. [snickers] Andry definitely has Issues and did many things that I disagree with, but there's a reason my ESG character was a takeoff on Andry and not Pol. [nods]
It'd be worth finishing Dragon Star at some point, but I'd grab the books from the library or www.half.com instead of paying full price for them. Some things are done really well in DS (off the top of my head and having not reread for awhile: Meiglan's character development, Rohannon and Chayla's plotlines, Sionell's part of the Sionell/Pol/Spouses romantic polygon), and some are . . . really, really not. [snrks] DP is much better overall, but.
And yeah, there's a lot of loose ends to pick up in a third trilogy. I'd personally like to see Jihan as High Princess and other inheritances more than The Continued Adventures Of Pol's Generation, but I also desperately want
( ... )
Andry was a douche. But I never understood how he got from being kind of ambitious to everyone totally and completely mistrusting him. It seemed really sudden (although that might have been the multiple time jumps during that period). And I felt bad for the guy. Pol, though-- good, honest guy, but he deserved several punches to the face. (Who's read that book and DOESN'T have a crush on Rohan?)
I keep intending to pick up the other books when I'm at used book stores. I just forget.
It probably won't ever happen, but I wouldn't mind reading any of those books. I may end up getting the last of the series, just so I can read more if she brings out a sequel/prequel.
I prefer Laurie when she's being badass and evil ala House of M. Most of the time I find her kind of boring. But she doesn't make me roll my eyes the way Laura does.
