Heh, it's easy to articulate why Meiglan is annoying: she's a stereotypical Pretty, Fragile, Dependent Little Girl, with little personality beyond that, and Pol decides he needs to be the Big Strong Man and protect her instead of going for actual romance [*cough*Sionell*cough*] and not having a twit for a father-in-law. >_>
Pol has some pretty severe Daddy Issues that I don't think he ever really worked out. Honestly, I tended to sympathize with Andry more, probably because I wanted to punch Pol in the face a lot. Idiot.
I never finished Dragon star-- I only got through the first book. Really, I prefer the first two Dragon Prince books. (Although rereading Sunrunner's Fire made me request Andry/Pol smut. Cause I'm a perv that way.) But from what I hear she really should do a third trilogy-- I mean, where does Pol go from there?
END-OF-DS SPOILERS IN THE THIRD PARAGRAPHsariel_diOctober 19 2007, 20:47:51 UTC
[nodnodnod] And while it's entirely understandable to have Daddy Issues when your dad is as awesome as Rohan (. . . yes, I still have a huge crush on him), there's a certain degree of twit-ness that . . . yeah. [snickers] Andry definitely has Issues and did many things that I disagree with, but there's a reason my ESG character was a takeoff on Andry and not Pol. [nods]
It'd be worth finishing Dragon Star at some point, but I'd grab the books from the library or www.half.com instead of paying full price for them. Some things are done really well in DS (off the top of my head and having not reread for awhile: Meiglan's character development, Rohannon and Chayla's plotlines, Sionell's part of the Sionell/Pol/Spouses romantic polygon), and some are . . . really, really not. [snrks] DP is much better overall, but.
And yeah, there's a lot of loose ends to pick up in a third trilogy. I'd personally like to see Jihan as High Princess and other inheritances more than The Continued Adventures Of Pol's Generation, but I also desperately want

Andry was a douche. But I never understood how he got from being kind of ambitious to everyone totally and completely mistrusting him. It seemed really sudden (although that might have been the multiple time jumps during that period). And I felt bad for the guy. Pol, though-- good, honest guy, but he deserved several punches to the face. (Who's read that book and DOESN'T have a crush on Rohan?)
I keep intending to pick up the other books when I'm at used book stores. I just forget.
It probably won't ever happen, but I wouldn't mind reading any of those books. I may end up getting the last of the series, just so I can read more if she brings out a sequel/prequel.
It's the time jumps and it's what he's doing because of his ambition (and twitchiness over Sorin, and nightmares/prophecies), and the fact that he never actually, like, explains anything to his family. He breaks a LOT of Sunrunner traditions and taboos (even if Sioned broke some of them too, but she was more discreet about some of them and the others were just her rather than rewriting Goddess Keep entirely). Book 3 made me really want to hit Andry, but he gets some very appropriate scenes near the end, which I liked.
[nodnods, re Pol] (Heeeeee. Yeah, Rohan is awesome. ^_^)
Libraries should have 'em too; I know the ones by me do, and they're pretty pathetic libraries, so . . .
[nods] I mean, given that we haven't even gotten the third Ambrai book, and as far as I know there's no legal issues with publishing that one . . . [snrks] Still, we can hope. And it's a shame that she's apparently anti-roleplaying (but not fanfiction? that or the FAQ-writer doesn't grok fanfic . . .); a good Dragon Prince/Star game would be fun.
Truth. He was pretty open about the fact that he was going to do what he wanted to do. There were moments when I wanted to smack him upside the head and tell him to just explain things. But then there was that scene with Chay where he tried and and it didn't work and I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him he was a douche all at the same time.
(My favorite part of the series was Rohan's first Rialla. It was just so much fun.)
Yes, but going to the library takes effort.
Wait. How is an RPG taking away from her livelihood? Does playing in her world suddenly make people stop buying her books? I'm confused now. But I'm almost tempted to start up a DP/DS GJ game now. If I could figure out how to set it up.

[nodnods] If he hadn't been making such serious changes from the start, or if he'd been older before he took over Goddess Keep, or if Sorin had lived, I think things would've gone a lot better. (Then again, in book 3, if Andry hadn't had his war-trained Sunrunners, Pol wouldn't've been able to pull off the ubermagic he did at the end, so.) [giggles at the last, nods
