Weather, but also good things

As I feared, unlike yesterday, today we did have black ice and we did have school. ::pouts:: So I'm in class rather than spending the morning wrapped in blankets finishing Watchmen, but I also managed not to get stuck in a ditch somewhere, so that's good. More good things in the world, in case you needed some:

That much ruffling took a lot of time and planning! I'm so impressed.

That PSA made me happy. There seems to be some doubt about whether it will be effective - I hope so, but the fact that it's out there at all is nice. It certainly can't hurt.

I always think of those sort of PSAs as good things because even if they really only make a handful of people think twice that's worth it. And if each of those handful of people wind up passing on a little of what they've learned to a few people and those people.... etc etc

I know we want maximum impact, of course, but yes, change takes time, and every positive step is something if it even makes a little difference. The next generation is better, and the generation after that, we hope.

Ooooh, owl pellets! I actually have some around here somewhere because I helped out at a class at the zoo and there were extras, so they told all of us to take some home. Also, love the water bear and love the brain. She needs to market a "full head" and hollow version of that as a hat!

Ooh, hat! I'm sure she could, she's obviously very skilled.

A class at the zoo with owl pellets sounds fantastic!

Okay, those water bears are interesting, but rather disturbing lookng.

That knitting project is awesome, but her reasoning is even better.

Now, I really like the idea of the Hillary Duff PSA. They've been airing it here on TV. It's the delivery from Duff and it being Duff in general that makes it ineffective, IMO. Her valley girl speak and the fact that Duff isn't popular anymore with the tweens. She isn't popular in general. Someone else delivering that, someone more famous or someone more respected, would work better, IMO.

I thought the water bears were cute, but I can see how it could easily go the other way. They are rather like a slug-alien. :)

I must be an old fogey--I didn't know Hillary Duff wasn't popular. Actually, I'm surprised I didn't have to look up her name to put in this post. Putting aside her waning popularity, why do you think her valley girl accent would make the ad ineffective? Does it make it sound like she doesn't believe what she's saying?

I liked her snarky response. I thought maybe they made the ad more "light" so it wouldn't come across as a lecture.

The valley girl accent bugs because I don't think that the audience they are targeting are that dumb. I feel like emphasizing that kind of delivery is like trying to bring it to their level when I find that unnecessary and probably laughable to the audience they are targeting. A light delivery is just fine and I see the necessity as well, but the use of Duff and the use of the "we understand you" tone just kinda blew it for me, from my perspective.

But what audience are they targeting? I guess I don't know. I was linked to the YouTube vid through an email, so I haven't seen it on TV. I was probably coming at it from the perspective of having a 10-year-old niece who is obsessed with fashion and pop culture and wants to be 13 right now, and I don't think she would find the delivery laughable. But like I said, I don't know the actual audience.

Even if it reaches a few ten-year-olds, I'm glad it's out there, though I understand what you're saying about wanting to have maximum impact and not wanting to be tuned out.

*Is worried by "dessication"*

Owl peelets *are* cool

Breed standards must have changed DRAMATICALLY in the intervening years (this is possible, I know) because that doesn't look like any Airedale I have ever seen.

WOW BRAIN!

I was playing spot Obama's "Speech" patterns during his inaugral address after listening to that BBC thing it was FUN.

Did I say WOW BRAIN! ?

LOVE that vid: kids over here - including mine who shoul dKNOW better - have been saying it for years and it make me INSANE.

WOW BRAIN!

On the plus side, 2009 can only get better, right? Right???

Edited for calling a video clip a DVD *facepalms*
