Times Ianto is unrelentingly deadpan: 7
I love this episode so much. The symmetry in the plot is gorgeous, the atmosphere is gorgeous, and the theme of personal connections, picking up where it left off in Random Shoes, is pretty much my pet thesis statement for the entire season. Gwen says, "It's like there's two separate worlds: there's Torchwood, then there's real life." The Torchwood people can't tell the truth to anyone in "real life," but they don't connect with each other, maybe because they all know too much. The Rift refugees are right in the middle: not part of Torchwood, but aware of it. They know enough to be confidants, but not enough, at first, to be scared away. They're exactly what each of the Torchwood crew needs (sorry, Ianto and Tosh!) but unfortunately, Torchwood doesn't have what they need. So those connections, too, are doomed to be impermanent. Sigh.
Have we seen Owen looking this genuinely happy before? Gwen/Emma was sweet and a little weird, Jack/John was heartbreaking, but Owen/Diane killed me DED. Also, Diane rocks. I don't blame Owen for falling for her.
It looks like what was cut from the BBCA airing was a Rhys bum shot, a lot of Owen and Diane's second sex scene, and a couple of bits of Owen/Diane conversation. It's understandable, but you can check out those conversation snippets here; they're rather nice, and the first one in particular I thought was good information about Diane's character.
