Unless I'm mistaken (or it's historic legend), isn't this where the "give them the finger" gesture comes from? The way I heard it, if you're just scratching your head and wondering what the hell I'm talking about, is that to prevent the English army from having these gazillion longbowmen, the French would cut off the middle fingers of men they captured, thus preventing them from being able to use a bow. At the battle the archers showed the French their fingers (from across the battlefield) as a sign that they could still "pluck yew" (from which longbows were made).
