Runo Knows...Crecy

Yeah, there's supposed to be some kind of accent in the name, but I'll be damned if I know (or care) how to do that in LJ...

Crecy is a battle.  It's also a comic book, written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Raulo Caceres.

Back in ye olden days - you know, sometime before last Tuesday, I think it's 1346 - the English are rampaging through the French countryside, burning fields, raping cattle, and burning women, or something like that.  Generally being arseholes, as Ellis would probably phrase it.  They're goading the French into one big battle that they'd rather not fight (the English would rather not fight, that is) but the titular good guys in the story - the English - have a secret weapon of sorts - a gazillion or so longbowmen.

The whole tale is entertainingly told in a fairly typical Ellis voice through the main character, one of the English archers, who is knowingly describing it to someone from our time.  There's no attempt to hide the author's knowledge of our time; it might be a bit confusing, at first, but it makes it an interesting and rather conversational read - even when talking about things which may or may not be a bit boring if read in a history book.

Raulo Caceres' art is described as "stunningly detailed" in a blurb on Amazon.com.  I'd go a bit ore, perhaps, with "confusingly detailed" myself, as it's typically really good black and white work - but occasionally there's just so much detail it can overwhelm my eyes a bit.  Not that doing that is a hard thing to accomplish these days.

But it's a short book, and a good one - I'd have to definitely recommend it.  Just watch out for the adult language and graphic violence, natch.
