“How?” said Lyssa, with a jab to Rune’s ribs.

Rune peered over his book, one brow raised. “How what?”

“How,” said Lyssa, body groaning in protest as she forced herself up on one elbow, “do you manage to cook like that and look as if you haven’t eaten in ages?”

“Well,” said Rune, “for starters, I don’t eat half the pie in one sitting.”

She slumped against the back of the couch with a scowl. “What? You’d have me let it go to waste?”

“Right,” he said, eyes on the hand gripping her middle, “the bellyache is a much better solution.”

Lyssa followed his gaze and gave her bloated stomach a pat. “Completely worth it,” she said with a grin. Rune shook his head and adjusted his book. She poked at her belly and a frown settled across her lips. “The extra miles to get rid of it on the other hand…”

She gave the boney frame in the tent-like shirt beside her a thoughtful stare, eyes slowly narrowing. “You magic it off, don’t you?”

Rune all but dropped the book as he spun to meet her accusatory glare. “Huh?”

“The pie, the cookies.” She tapped at his side, the cloth collapsing beneath her hand. “All of it. You just zap it away.”

He shied away, curling himself tightly against the arm of the couch. “Of course,” he said, shaking his head again. “I quite enjoy looking emaciated.”

Lyssa snorted. Long moments passed in silence while Rune slowly slid back into his seat, and she laid her head back in his lap. “You think,” she said, prodding her belly again, “that maybe you could magic mine?”

“Not even if I knew how.”

“Aww,” she said, “don’t want to change me?”

“Don’t want to give you excuses to eat more pie.”
