Summary: Alex muses on the situation and comes to a conclusion.

As time passed he wasn’t sure what bothered him more: the idea that the others thought he really had been so stupid and clumsy as to pass out in a pond, or that they knew exactly what had happened and didn’t care.

It wasn’t (just) that they didn’t care about him, he already knew that-God knew he didn’t care about them either-but if they knew what Kennet was capable of doing and thought what he’d done to Alex was perfectly acceptable, then they were as much monsters as Kennet was.

The thought turned his stomach every time it resurfaced, unbidden, in his mind. Bunching together around someone they thought was strong, he understood that, it was human nature. But protecting a predator?

Alex groaned and dropped his head to the library desk, then wished he hadn’t; it still hurt, although the bruise was barely visible any more. Kennet was a threat and no one wanted to be on the receiving end of it. Human nature.

Right now he really hated human nature.

He dragged his head up from the desk and tilted it backwards instead, staring blankly up at the ceiling. If they were only acting on their primitive urges for defence, then there was no problem with him acting on his to defend himself-

Two fingers stabbed him in the forehead, right in the middle of the sore patch. Alex snarled and made a grab for the hand; he only found thin air. Turning in his seat so fast he almost fell from it, the unfamiliar retreating figure ducked and waved at him, grinning widely.

Only as the figure turned away again did Alex see the blurring of the features.

If it was the last thing he did, he was going to make sure that this predator got knocked off the top of the food chain.
