She stands on the edge of the roof, looking down at the city below, arms spread out wide as if she were about to take flight. Her eyes close and she imagines the fall: one graceful leap, wind rushing past her ears, almost like flying-and then the inevitable return to the ground, a body breaking open, darkness. The pain-over.
Her eyes snap open and she stumbles back, afraid less of the height than of the fact that a year ago, she would have jumped willingly.
But she's past that now. She's free of it all.
