Aija looked at the clock. Her best friend had been here for over an hour and she was surprised she hadn't been fired yet because of the volume of her friend's talking and laughter. Finally she looked like she was leaving. "Look gurl, I got to go. You gonna come by later?" Aija nodded and hissed out, "Yeah, if I still have a job. You better not get me in trouble, Ky."
M'Kya rolled her eyes and grabbed her keys. Her voice was still ignorant and loud.
"Aija! You not goin' to get in trouble and if you do then you need to get up out of this bitch because there are other damn jobs out there!"
Aija was through with her best friend's showboating. "Bye."
M'Kya blinked. "What you mean 'Bye'?"
Aija sat in her chair answering calmly, "I need to work."
M'Kya just stared at her for a bit before saying, "Whatever, I'll see you later. Bye." She turned and walked out; nose up in the air, leaving Aija to shake her head sadly. She hated that M'Kya felt she had to be ethnic and loud to have a place in the world. A while back she had thought that too and it didn't do anything for her. Now she knew that she had to work hard to get to that place. She put on her headset and started working again.
From time to time however, Aija would see Hikaru come back and forth by her office and whenever he did, he would glance at her disapprovingly. Aija finally had enough by his fifth trip and after making sure her purse was ready to leave after clocking out, followed behind him back to his office. He was sitting at his desk.
"Mr. Mizuno, is there something I can do for you?" She asked.
Hikaru looked up; confusion all on his face as if her being there was a complete surprise.
"I'm sorry?"
Aija resisted the urge to roll her eyes...she knew what he was up to. "I just saw you coming past my office a few times. Was there something you needed?"
Hikaru shook his head and Aija turned to leave saying, "All right." But as she did she heard her boss chuckle. "I see it's almost time for you to get up out of hurr." Aija froze in her step and turned around slowly. "What are you talking about?"
Hikaru stared boldly at her before saying, "I overheard from your obnoxious friend that you were going to her house later. I bet you can't wait to get up out of this bitch so that you can go to the ghetto and drink some fourties with your homies." He leaned back in his chair with his hands behind his head as he finished, "Good thing you don't have to work overtime, huh?"
Speechless, Aija stared back just as bold before crossing her arms and saying in calm voice, "Wow, and here I thought you were professional."
Hikaru dropped his grin. "Pardon?"
Aija did a mock gang sign hitting her heart twice saying, "Up in hurr? Fourties with my homies? You really think you know me, huh?" Hikaru was silenced as Aija retorted, "Well, let me tell you something, sir. You don't know me like you think you do. I'm not like my friend. I am adept inside and out and I don't need people like you trying to mock me inot leaving my job."
Hikaru regarded the now angry receptionist who continued saying, "I do what I do damn well; doing every crazy thing you ask me to do. I even run out to get your dry cleaning and the last time I checked, receptionists don't do that. I don't even gossip about you or overhear your conversations either." Her boss looked down slight; he had indeed eavesdropped on her. Aija paused and took a deep breath, remembering M'Kya's words. "But I respect you...so, I'm just going to ignore the HUGE line you just crossed with me and get back to my work."
Hikaru was now the speechless one. He leaned foward and crossed his hands, not knowing what to say to this audacious woman. Aija didn't even let him get the last laugh, turning and heading toward her office. Before she did, she turned her head to look at him.
"Oh, in answer to your question...Yes, I am ready to get out of here. Not to drink with my friends, but to get home and be in my comfortable bed where I can be away from work."
She glanced up at the clock seeing it was 4:30 and said, "Actually, it's time to do that now. You have a good weekend, Mr. Mizuno. I know I will."
The young woman walked out of Hikaru's sight and he was left in thought. After a while he smirked, rubbing his chin. "Yes, I think I will keep you, Miss Edwards. You are a unique one, I see."
