I had 2 miscarriages in iyaar, and started bleeding in iyaar during my pg with Shimie. I always thought it weird. Didnt realize there's something to it.
I still wouldn't take any chances on the folic acid front - whatever your ethnicity you could still be the exception and who would want to risk spina bifida for their child.
My SIL's MIL calls her everyday to remind her to eat a few almonds...apparently they have enough folid acid. I can't handle prenatels either and my iron is always good enough so I just take some individual vitamins like C, Calcium, and Omega 3s when I can.
I agree with squirrels, I can't believe a doctor would advise that you don't have to supplement with folic acid. You probably eat a lot of flour products supplemented with folic acid so this doesn't apply to you. However, the rate of spina bifida is still 1 in a 1000 (although many of them are aborted in the U.s.). if he delivers 1000 Jewish babies in his lifetime one of them is likely to have spina bifida, imagine his liability when the mother sues him for malpractice!
whoa!!!!! My 2nd miscarriage, a twin at 11weeks pregnancy, was on the fourth of iyaar. my next miscarriage, at six weeks, was on the third of iyaar. a year later when I was pg with SM I held my breath... and on the sixth of iyaar I began bleeding. BH it was nothing, but since then I've been terrified to be pregnant in iyaar.
as for folic acid, I disagree! there are sadlyh plenty of yidden with SB and Folic acid shouldnt be taken lightly.

I don't think flour products are supplemented with it, but I think some oils are...
