Kitniot and Hechsherim

Jews always travelled. Sometimes Sefardim ended up in Ashkenazi countries, and sometimes Ashkenazim ended up in Sefardi countries. Depending on how organized they were (individuals? families? communities?) they retained nothing, almost nothing... up to everything of their minhagim ( Read more... )

Yeah I buy kosher le pesach lipstick and gloss (but not regular make up) but I don't buy the expensive Jewish stuff just the regular drug store stuff on the OU or CRC list. It just makes sense to me, because you can't help but get lipstick in your mouth. Also we don't use spray deodorant because of the grain alcohol and I guess if we don't have spray we just don't use anything on Shabbos so it makes sense why someone who needs it would buy something special for Pesach. The Shulachan Aruch, I'm pretty sure says a woman has to fast because the woman were spared too, but it isn't the usual custom so my husband says there is a question. What he does is bring me home a piece of cake from the sium they do for all the first borns. Easy.

Grain alcohol in deodorant? I have never heard of that, it would be much too expensive!

Oops I think I meant denatured alcohol. Perfumes probably have it too.

That is an interesting observation. I'm not sure if it's right-wing charedi craziness that fuels it or what. Usually, the same people who question your husband's minhagim are they same ones who get all confuzzled when they see Carribbean/South American Jews and like to torment gerim on the side. Besides, from what I've seen most people don't even eat in each others homes during Pesach. I know one dude who won't even eat in his parents house during Pesach and they are frum.

What I find fascinating is rthe amount of non-gebroks products that have become available this year. It is harder to find stuff like Matzo Ball mix or farfel.

ITA with teacup about the KLP makeup. Lipstick/gloss tends to end up on my cups; eating utensils; and teeth. So I do see a need for that if you nix kitniot. Also in my case, tons of black cosmetics/hair care products have chometz and kitniot in them so I have to be careful.

I agree with you, it stems from being meshigene frum and from ignorance and lack of respect for tradition (which is pretty ironical).

I wish I could buy Pessach Nutella, but all the spreads have kitniot and since this year we're trying... oh well, I don't need to gain weight ;)

Oh man, not being able to have KLP Nutella sounds torturous. Maybe you can make fruit desserts with cream? Personally, I wish I can eat kitniot. There's only so much potato and matzo I can take.

my husband is persian and he does not eat kitniot on pesach in our house, although many years ago he would eat it at his persian relatives houses. It used to be because chometz is added to our rice here in the u.s. nowadays you can buy special pesachdik rice imported from Israel but he's already given up the minhag.
