Attention all mechanically inclined citizens of Ruby City. I'm Hoban Washburne, simply called Wash by my friends. Before getting impaled and waking up here, I was the pilot of a Firefly class transport ship called Serenity. I've been here a couple weeks now, and I really, really miss the sky ( Read more... )

[Wash watches the clockworks with childish glee, a grin splitting his face as he bounces excitedly in place] That is so amazing! You made those yourself? I just - wow! I'm speechless! Could you do that to my dinosaurs? Could you like, make me a whole army of prehistoric minions?

No- forget I asked. [He laughs waving his hand dismissively] I'm just so excited, I've never seen anything like them before! Are they sentient? Do they each have individual wills and personalities? How did you manage that? Is there a chip buried in there, with a simple AI program, or did you infuse them with life itself?

I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, I can't help it, I'm nosy.

And you poor thing, you got caught in the body swap too? I imagine your experience with it isn't half as fun as mine; I get to watch Jayne squeal and flit around like a girl. [snigger]

Oh, we don't have clockworks in my 'Verse. [Wash plunks his chin into his hand, grinning wistfully at the screen.] Not real ones, anyway. I think there might be a planet that's attempting to sophisticate steam engines and the like to that level, but I haven't heard that they've had much success. Most people think it's silly anyway, what with all the spaceships and Cortex technology we have, so it's pretty much limited to the realm of rich eccentrics.

A chip is a small electronic circuit implanted in a semi-conductive material. They pretty much run all the tech in my 'Verse. I'm sort of fuzzy on the details of what makes them work, but they're capable of storing data and performing predefined tasks. They're pretty nifty.

I imagine it would be. I'm sure the real Jayne is out there enjoying the many delights of the female form. I'm just all agog from watching his body actually... you know... behave.

I'm not especially mechanically-adept, so I'm afraid I really wouldn't be of much help to you, but... It occurs to me that you're attempting to create a flying machine within the confines of a city where everybody is kept at the whims of substantially more powerful beings. Beings who don't want us to leave. Does that not seem... imprudent to you?

Nope! Think about what you just said for a second now. Powerful supernatural beings want to keep us all like pets. That means they probably don't want us dead, if they can help it. And if they're really so powerful, than I'm sure that they can. So even if they smite me, and my plane goes down? I figure the worst I'll get out of it is a hospital visit and a few neat scars.

And a really angry wife, but hopefully she'll wait until I'm all healed before killing me.

[There's a pause as she considers his words, and she's unable to keep a tiny grin of admiration from seeping through to her words when she speaks.]

You make a valid point; I honestly hadn't thought of it that way. You undertake this, then, with the full knowledge that you will in all probability be injured?

As much as I hate getting hurt - yes, yes I am. I'm a pilot; the only thing I've ever wanted to do with my life is fly. Don't get me wrong, I love coming dirtside for a day or two, but before, there's always been that knowledge that when I'm ready, I'll be able to take to the skies and fly once more. Being stuck here, ground like this is... well... not pleasant, to say the least.

Hey, that's even better! Because I haven't any idea if my designs will actually fly. Well, they look like they should, but that part's pretty negligible in the long run, ain't it? [He laughs]

Flier?

Are you crazy? Humans can't fly, much less with bulky machinery. Save yourself the fiery death and look for something more practical like a car.

That'd be discouraging if I hadn't spent a good deal of my life flying. =]

Nice try, I was born 200 plus years ago, not yesterday.

What word is "=]"? I don't fluently read Xing.

Someone has explained the multiverse principle to you by now, haven't they?

It's a smiley face, not a word! Tilt your head to the side, you should see it.

[Carmen reads the post and scans the attachements before speaking] I should be able to help you. But I'll be working without my blueprints, so the work will be slower than if I had them avaliable.

That's fine! [Wash grins, shrugging one shoulder carelessly] I'm just glad to be doing something, you know? This isn't the first time I've been grounded, but at least this time, I can still see the stars.

[Carmen nods] I know how that can be. [Adjusting her hat slightly, Carmen lowers her hand back to her side]
