[Gilbert has made the mistake of taking a nap in the middle of the day. He hadn't meant to. He'd been reading, and drifted off. Further compounding this mistake was his choice to do such in the living room on the couch. But the fire in the fireplace was warm, and the couch was comfortable. And it's only now as he shifts and his communicator topples ( Read more... )

[There was something off about her glimpse as she turned on her communicator. Something half-forlorn and half-sympathetic. Studying him all the same... Maybe she was better off leaving him alone, but...]

...I'm really not sure. If you can. But... I like to think that the memories themselves never disappear. Even if you can't remember them yourself. They're still there.

[Gilbert notices the expression, but his own is sufficiently far away enough that he isn't really one to talk at the moment. He nods though at that.]

They happened. Whatever they are. That doesn't change, even if... [A shake of his head.] I don't know why I'm thinking so much on it lately. It shouldn't... does it make a difference?

Do they...? You mean the... [She paused a little and turned her gaze from him. Her hand slowly coming to touch her hood. Evenly as she could.] ...It's hard for me to say. I've... never lost my own memories.

[She hadn't. But...]

Mm. I don't mean to... I guess I'm just talking. [He looks at her curiously.] It's never bothered me before all that much is all.

[It takes Gilbert a moment to hear him, strange as that is. His thoughts are twisted in on themselves at the moment, down pathways they haven't gone for a very, very long time. So when he glances up to catch sight of Naoki, he's almost startled by his presence, and it shows with a faint widening of his eyes. He smiles though, or tries to, the expression faint at best.]

[Gilbert blinks once again as Naoki walks over, and maybe there's the faintest bit of relaxing in Gilbert's posture as he approaches, at the touch to his hair. He looks up at him and nods slightly.] I'm fine. Just... things on my mind that shouldn't be. Not after all this time.

...are you all right, Gilbert?

Dreams...sometimes they're just dreams, but other times memories can influence them.

If you've forgotten things, I'm sure that somewhere in your memories they still exist. [He smiles faintly.] I've had dreams of my parents quite randomly... before then I could never remember their faces if I tried.

Ah... [Oh that question is harder than it should be. But he nods.} I'm fine.

Memories. [He echoes that word, brow furrowing, but he nods.] They must be... somewhere. It's been years since I've really worried about it. [A pause.] So then... you dreamed of memories.

[He nods, even if he has a little doubt about that response.]

Yes, I guess you can say that. It just happened one night, I'm not sure what prompted it.

You can't remember things? Is it from your past too?

[What now? Gilbert's exceptional acting skills aren't fully believable? ...probably not, huh?]

But... it sounds like it's a good thing, to have remembered.

[He pauses but then nods.] Mm. I have no memories of my childhood before I was nine.

Why the fuck would you want to remember now if it wasn't worth keeping the memory around in the first place?

I'm not sure it works that way. I didn't choose to... I don't know.

Didn't choose to forget? Then whoever made you didn't do his work very thoroughly.

It may have been no one. Just circumstances, or... [And this part is sort of worrying him a lot.] or the Abyss.
