Any advice would be useful, but I'd like to take him from after Street Magic.

There's this thread on where to try looking up plants, but apart from that... I'm the anon on page 2 who asked about him after Will of the Empress and that timeline is what most of my notes are for (I'm just re-reading Circle and The Circle Opens now), so I'm afraid I can't help much. XD;

Er, I'll try anyway: Take notes on his street talk but only use it around street kids and when he's upset?

I am still reading the earlier books, so once I'm done I shall sort my notes from those from the ones from Empress, and I'll be back! o/;;;;

* Er, my notes tend to be quotes usually but when I quote dump here I try to interpret as well.

I'm finishing up the second quartet with Shatterglass now (one can glean some notes on different characters even when it isn't 'their' book), so before I start pulling my notes together, I just wanted to check: You say you're taking him after Street Magic, but there's still four years between that and Will of the Empress. Are you grabbing him from right after Street? Because while I doubt you'll wait for the Yanjing and Gyongxe novel to come out we do find out a fair amount from Empress (I haven't read Melting Stones yet).

holy tl;dr, Batman: 1/3 anonymous June 1 2009, 03:58:02 UTC
Sweet as. Okay, attempt at advice 2.0; most of the quotes are from Street Magic:

How could he explain he'd been thinking like a street rat, after talking to the Vipers and Camelguts? Even now, after four years of regular meals, affection, and education, he sometimes felt as if his head were split in two. Magic and the Living Circle temples didn't exactly mesh with a life in which meals were stolen and mistakes were paid for with maiming and death.

I don't mean to say that Briar is like two different characters but the fact is that he does think differently when he's with street kids and around 'civilized' people. Granted, I've not seen many people playing street kids, so it may not even come up at all, but it's still something important about him. Part of it is a question of morals (for example, street Briar doesn't mind taking the bribe from that stone mage because it's money but mage Briar is offended), part of it is just good manners and education ( ... )

Briar doesn't do emotions well; iirc he gets embarrassed and tries to change the subject when he does get emotional. He thinks birthday parties are sappy and sentimental, he doesn't do pity, and Tris notes that his telling her she had a gift for locks is "high praise, coming from him". When he cares about someone, he'll show rather than tell it. He is more verbally affectionate to plants than he is to people.

Though he's not yet sleeping around the way he does in Empress, he's already a bit of a flirt by Street. I'd say that part of what makes him good at getting the girls is that mage Briar has grown up surrounded by women, so while he may not understand everything about them (Why did girls get honey-sweet over things that weren't even alive?), he knows them better than the average boy: He knows about female clothing, he knows to look out for details about art, clothing, and the way people talk for stories to tell the girls later. His attitudes towards girls in Empress give some good indications about how he starts to treat them ( ... )

Some littler things I can't tl;dr about:
  • One thing he's taken from Tris is that he's fairly cheap and practical when it comes to material goods, but coming from poverty he does like his nice things; this seems to mostly come up regarding clothes, especially those from Sandry.
  • At fourteen he seems somewhat unaware that Rosethorn and Lark are together, so he could be a bit puzzled by any slashers and yuri. YMMV; I mostly make a note of this because absolutely nothing comes up about anything other than heterosexuality until Empress.
  • Food is always one of his top priorities. He eats fast because once food's in his stomach, no one can take it from him. He can cook, but if there is a cook, he'll get to know them and help them out.
  • Let him read and let him find someone to talk books with. That said, the most we ever learn about his preferences in books is that Tris taught him to read classic Kurchali, and given his feelings about feelings, he's unlikely to read romance.
  • He's well capable of taking charge of a situation, particularly if ( ... )
