"I'm always nice," came Jemaine's immediate response, the hand in Bret's tightening emphatically.

Frankly he hadn't wanted to visit Bret's friend. When emotions ran high so too did he -- as far away as he could. It wasn't that he didn't care, necessarily, it was more a case of not having the physical or immanent capability of handling emotional situations.

He just wasn't wired that way.

But Bret was convincing and annoyingly attached to his hip, a proceeding that would have bothered him more if Bret hadn't disappeared repeatedly without warning. It still bothered him, it just bothered him less with the interference in time. And while Bret insisted on courting inclusion into Jemaine's alone time, he didn't really mind the extra attention and the almost desperate way in which Bret hung off of him.

And, he mused, he did quite enjoy the warm body at night.

Oh dear. "Time stuff," Bret explained, "I think I'm going faster or something. Jemaine says I keep showing up faster than I should." He held up their joined hands and, so Jemaine didn't have to feel quite as embarrassed, added, "I think I'm dragging him along."

As scary as it was to think that he could advance months beyond Jemaine without realizing, this (unlike many of the problems Rowan and magic and everything raised) seemed easily solvable. All they had to do was keep an eye on each other or hold onto each other. After what had happened, Bret was totally okay with either option

But Penny didn't have anyone to do that for her, now that Billy was gone. Bret smiled kindly at her. "Can we come in?"

Bret led the way, pulling Jemaine in behind him. He looked around mutely for a moment, thinking on how he'd never been there before. It sucked that his-- their --first visit was for such a sad reason.

A reason that wasn't going to be avoided for long, so he figured he'd just get the awkward questions out of the way first. Squeezing Jemaine's hand anxiously, he asked, "How long did you say he's been gone?" It didn't matter what the time shifts were doing. What mattered was how long Penny had been waiting. The shorter the time, the more likely it was that Billy was going to come back. Or so he hoped.

Bret nodded sadly, staring in an almost disconcerting manner. It wouldn't do for one of them to go silent for an hour because of a time skip. "That's not too long, though. I mean, if I was just on my own I probably would've gone really far beyond you and Jemaine by now. I could've been a month ahead." He hadn't really done the math, but he figured it was entirely possible. After all, who knew if the rate he was at would stay constant anyway?

None of this really made much sense to begin with. It was all magic-stuff. Not science. Not as far as he understood it. He found himself suddenly and heavily missing Hood and Guy and all their science-y wisdom. At least they still had Cho and Jack.

Jemaine watched, startled, and tightened the hand in Bret's.

This is exactly why he hadn't wanted to come.

"Um," he gave Bret a clipped glance and stepped forward, reaching out to awkwardly pat at Penny's shoulder. "There, there. It'll be okay." He continued his halting pat and tugged Bret forward, demanding his assistance. Jemaine hadn't thought much past patting her sympathetically.
