Who: Penny, Bret, and Jemaine What: Cheering Penny up When: Evening of Monday February 8th (B&J are running faster so they'll be surprising her) Where: Penny's flat
Bret understood that Jemaine was out of his element and stepped in to take his place on the comfort front. Still holding Jemaine's hand securely, he leaned into Penny and wrapped his free arm around her.
"Shh...don't worry. Everything's gonna work out." He knew he was just reiterating what Jemaine had said, but really the 'what' didn't matter. It wasn't like he expected Penny to respond. Comforting noises were the more important thing. He hummed sympathetically, waiting for her to get to a point where she was okay to talk again.
"You're welcome," Jemaine replied automatically, moving his hand to rest against Penny's back and rubbing it as awkwardly as when he'd patted her shoulder. He distantly realised how bizarre this clumsy three-person hug would look to any observer, his hand still connected to Bret's, Bret's arm around Penny, Penny's head in Bret's shoulder and Jemaine's body twisted to rub her back.
Well, if it was making her feel better, he supposed his mild back pain could be forgiven.
The hugging was ridiculous, maybe, but Bret thought it was supportive too. Bret needed Jemaine to support him just like Penny needed them both to support her. In fact, they-- the worldwalkers --all needed each other.
Which made Billy's disappearance all the more worrisome. Where would he have gone, anyway? It seemed like he was so attached to Penny. He'd been so much friendlier with her around...
Bret found himself saddened at the thought that their wizardly experiments weren't going to continue. He could try on his own, he supposed, but it would be much less scientific.
He was being too negative. It was time to think about something else. "Penny, if you need anything, let us know. We'll always be here to help." He emphasized the 'always' even as he realized that that wasn't necessarily true. The group had split up before. All he could do was wish it didn't happen again.
Jemaine mumbled a sigh when Penny shifted, wrapping his arm more firmly around her back, and glanced at Bret in a perturbed manner. "Yeah, we're here," he echoed, a little uncertainly, giving her waist a kindly tap.
Bret resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Jemaine. Yeah, this had gone on for a while, but Penny was upset. They had to be there for her. Although his arm was getting a cramp.
He stepped back, catching her eye. "Y'okay?" If she wasn't crying, maybe they could talk now.

He selfishly hoped she felt better soon.
