Jack kicked off his shoes the moment he reached the sand, uncaring where they fell. Jesus, it'd been too long since he'd been outside. Fifty days? He'd lost count of the specific number. But that didn't matter right now. Right now, his main concern was soaking up as much of this as he could, to remember every detail so he could treasure it when it came time to go back inside. Breathing deeply, uncaring if staff was watching or not, he restlessly walked around-- seeing what this party had to offer, yeah, but more to just feel the sand and grass-- real sand and grass!-- on his feet ( ... )

Edgeworth caught sight of Jack after he'd made his way out of the water and dressed himself once again. His hair was still wet from the seawater, but it was Kelly, for God's sake - he wasn't sure if he'd ever met anyone less prone to standing on ceremony.

So he greeted him with an only slightly self-conscious nod before glancing over to where his friend was headed. Honestly, it shouldn't have surprised him in the least, knowing Jack as he did - and bearing in mind, as he must, that Kelly was unfamiliar with the culture of the age into which they had been evidently thrust. (Or, perhaps, in which they had been all along, having only just woken up from the strange and vivid dream of the previous age - perhaps? But it would do no good to ponder such uncomfortable things just at the moment.)

"Bear in mind," he said a bit dryly, "that you are underage."

Turning to grin at Edgeworth, Jack smirked, opening his mouth to joke back, and then was aware of what he was doing. He was smiling. Without a thought, without any real reason, he was smiling. It wasn't mocking or sad or pained-- it was just a simple, happy grin at seeing his best friend approaching. He'd forgotten what that felt like; to be simply happy.

He'd missed it.

"Good thin' I got somebody who ain't underage wit' me," Jack suggested, walking towards Edge, unsure whether he'd actually get him something. But hey, it had to be worth a shot. "Sides, I started drinkin' a long time ago. No point in them restrictin' me now."

Jack's smile was open, cheerful, unambiguously happy. Edgeworth was not in the practice of acting in good spirits merely because another was happy - indeed, the idea of "infectious good cheer" struck him as rather absurd, as each individual's situation was unique, and the mere fact of another's good fortune was hardly enough to improve yours. Such empathy was absurd and neglectful of oneself.

Even so, Edgeworth smiled back. It was good to see his friend so happy.

"I'm not going to be complicit in your transgression, Kelly," Edgeworth replied with an attempt at severity which came out, in spite of his best efforts, as mock-severe. "And, as previous crimes do not mitigate a current one, so too does your past record not give you license now to drink."

It'd sounded far too good to be true, but there was an optimistic spark in Reeve that flared up at odd times-- like now. So he'd changed out of his good clothing and into the gaudy blue swim trunks left in the closet, then threw back on his thin undershirt simply because he couldn't stand going outside unprotected. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but now... no. Even now he felt exposed ( ... )

"Nice swimsuit," he remarked, smiling a little as he approached Reeve, trying to step noisily in order not to scare him. God, but sand felt weird under his feet. He wasn't used to sand-- grass, yes, concrete, of course, but sand? He'd rarely had the opportunity.

Turning from Reeve to face the water, a wave of homesickness washed over him, and he wondered how far from New York they were. "Great, ain't it?" he murmured, glancing down at his feet. Cautiously approaching the water-- he'd never gotten around to learning how to swim-- Jack stuck his bare feet in, hissing from the initial shock of cold.

"I hope they keep lettin' us out." Immediately he regretted the phrasing, and hoped Reeve didn't notice him in favor of enjoying the outdoors. "I missed a breeze."

Reeve's eyes flew open, and he glanced over his shoulder to give Jack a slight smirk. "It seems to be a universal trend that swim trunks are destined to be covered in flowers. Nice to see some things haven't changed ( ... )

Shaking his head and laughing a little, Jack looked down at the impromptu gift, unexpectedly happy. It was funny looking, and rougher to the touch than he'd expected, but it was something to treasure-- all the more because it came from Reeve. "Nah." Rethinking for a moment, he added, "Well-- sorta. When I were a kid, me, uh, me parents took me t'Coney Island. It's-- ya got fairs in yer world? It's a beach an' a fair all in one ( ... )

It felt so good to take a breath of cool, clean night air for the first time in over a month that Rin actually felt herself tearing up - she couldn't control it, and had to stop for a moment to rub hard at her eyes before moving along again. Evening, and the whole island breathed; small animal noises came from the woods, the chirp of frogs and rustling leaves ( ... )

He’d told Doumeki that he would… well, he would actually meet him out there, at the party…thing. He hated these things though. But it was outside and fresh air and… well, it couldn’t hurt, right? He slipped out of his room leaving his room with the orderly that took him and others out, and made his way to the party ( ... )

Rin jumped slightly at her name, but it was only a moment before she recognized the voice - and then she turned, giving Watanuki a smile that was small but actually felt surprisingly genuine. Indeed, there he was... her slender (former) roommate, approaching her with a gentle smile.

"Watanuki-kun," she said softly, moving to stand a little closer to him and bowing slightly. "I'm glad to see you're as improved as the rest of us... you look better than I've seen you in - ages."

She paused there, momentarily, unsure of how much she wanted to say, if she wanted to say anything at all. If there were staff nearby... well, her pathetic little ruse of not believing in St. Edelweiss had probably just been dispelled. Then again, it was flimsy already.

She licked her lips and sighed. "How are you?"

He paused and raised a hand to slide a finger under his glasses and rub at his golden eye. “Yes… it feels nice to be able to see again properly.” He confessed softly, looking her over to see she seemed to be in one piece too. His smile was soft and he straightened up again, lowering his hand and looking about as well.

There was few people around right now, so talk should be fine, though she seemed to make no show of hiding this Edelweiss from him either. It was real, they all knew that. None the less, he nodded to her. “It has been ages. You look better as well.” And sounded better then she had just the day before, he noted.

“I’m… still here. Obviously. Looking for Doumeki. He’s… doing better as well.” Though he still wanted to see him again. Even if he saw him not long ago he wanted to find him once more.

It could've been like a night at home, headed to the beach for a day trip with Eri, sun and surf during the day and a bonfire during the evening - only it totally wasn't, and even the unconscious, unbidden comparison was a little creepy.

Shiki could barely believe she was outside here, milling around with a crowd of people, most of them utter strangers to her. She hadn't really met anyone at St. Edelweiss, after all; and looking around now, it seemed like most of them were older than she was, and that most of them knew each other too.

It was sort of like high school all over again, only now bereft of vivacious Eri to pull her into the fray. And - she'd thought she'd grown so much, but still - it was intimidating. Shiki hovered awkwardly near one of the lanterns, looking around and blinking at the dark.

Joshua recognized Shiki, of course. Gosh, it was hard not to! He'd seen her enough, after all, and even if all he'd ever seen before was a picture he'd be able to recognize her - with that reticent little expression on her face, with that way she would be able to wear even the most fashion-forward clothes like they were three months out of date. She was such a distinct little personage.

So he sidled over to her, looking like she was just about to cry. Poor little thing. He decided to give her a little cheering-up.

"Gosh, it's really considerate how they reinforced the girls' bathing suits, isn't it?" he said with an encouraging smile. "Really helps to tuck in the tummy."

She recognized that voice - a cajoling, lighthearted, tittering companion for the entire time she'd been here. He'd seemed friendly at first, and then turned so strange, frightening in a way, distant and just mean and cold -

Shiki turned towards him and tried to smile. She'd see if friendliness worked. "Hi, Joshua. Um - do you like the beach? It's nice to be outside."

She'd leave the matter of the bathing suits alone.

It was unbelievable, really, how beautiful it was outside. The first step outside the door was a little uncomfortable with the slight light of the setting sun shining in his eyes, something he hadn't experienced in a long time, but it was certainly better than the artificial light he'd been experiencing the last while of his life ( ... )

It took a moment before Naruto really was capable of snapping out of his reverie. It was the soft sound of a girl and she was crying and it was coming behind him. Those were the first thoughts that came from his mind and in that order as well. Slowly, he turned around and caught sight of her. The girl he'd only seen once in Saint Edelweiss. The girl that had cheered him up on that day that had been so bad, so horrible. He remembered her. Remembered her strength and her kindness and everything about her and to see her there... he was caught a little off-guard by two things. First was his relief and happiness at finally seeing her there. He'd been worried because she's been so quiet lately. He could barely remember having seen or heard from her at all. Second was that she was crying. He didn't know why or anything like that but one of the things in the world that was the worst was seeing a girl crying ( ... )

She was laughing, and crying, running a hand over her face. It was stupid to be crying, sure but she was just that happy at this moment. The sick feeling in her tummy was gone as the pull of the sea was there once again. The feeling was indeed over whelming, even in the night. It didn’t matter, the water was warm still and the sands felt soothing ( ... )
