Ending the house hunt...for now

Well, even though there are plenty of loan options for first-time home buyers from the federal & state gov't's, I think Kyle and I are pretty much going to hang up our home hunting hats for the time being and resign our apt. lease. And...I'm okay with that. I had my gut wrenching cry earlier today as the disappointment worked its way out. ( Read more... )

Being self-employed is a whole lot of thankless, tiresome work. My dad incorporated himself for tax purposes, but they still have to constantly move cash from one account to another to pay anticipated taxes and all this other stuff.

And when you're making your list, you might want to make two: one of stuff you can do yourselves and one of stuff you can't. You can't plant 30-year-old trees to shade your back porch, but you can turn a sliding glass door into plantation doors.

(Good point in the second half of your comment; I was going to say something similar.)

Accidentally watching too much HGTV (it sucks me in, I swear) and "This Old House" may have given me a slightly inflated sense of what you can do to improve on a home, but there's no doubt in my mind that your perfect home does not exist as-is. There will be something wrong with every single one you look at, and the question is how important that problem is, how fixable it is, and/or how willing you are to live with it. Trees grow, streets get widened, traffic patterns change, neighbors come and go, appliances fail, and wiring/plumbing has to be replaced.

The houses you look at in the future may not have all of the things on your list, but if you can do some of the easier stuff yourself - like Trey mentioned - then you may find yourself with more options to choose from.

Well, part of the list is mainly a wish list, but also just a show of faith to know that God is going to take care of it. And maybe we'll find the right space @ the right price in order to do a lot of the stuff ourselves once it's ours. Who knows at this point...but God's got it under control for sure. :)
