I Should Make A Sandwich

► Holy crap, is it cold this morning! Right now it's 10 degrees Celsius, 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It's supposed to get warmer this afternoon, but as of right now I'm shivering and my left leg feels icy. Mind you, I'll take this over the oppressively unbearable summer swelter.

MalcolmD says: I was surprised to learn how racist Depp's revision of the Ranger/Tonto relationship was: "I'm partly native, so the natives are going to be the bosses and the whites are going to be evil clowns" is no better an attitude than the ones in those pulp stories that we're trying to get beyond.

You're right, the 10 Comics Events list is pretty nonsensical. The Infinity Gauntlet crossover matters because we've seen the actual item in a couple of stories since then? I think that it matters because it was a good story, but perhaps my values are askew.

As for One More Day, JMS wasn't happy about the editorial push that took the story in the direction that it went and it damaged his relationship with the company, so there's little point in blaming him for the core concept. I believe that the Sins Past and The Other arcs were his babies, so you might look to them as better examples of how he would prefer to write the character.

In One More Day, Mary Jane doesn't deserve the blame for what happened, but, because JMS and ( ... )

The Depp/Tonto/Lone Ranger thing actually sounds like a case of misguided overcompensation to me. I fail to see how ripping at the Lone Ranger benefits Tonto. It doesn't seem to be a case like the movie Without A Clue where they presented Doctor Watson as the detective genius and Sherlock Holmes as a bumbling fool who acts as his front. They're making this about race, and thereby making the white Lone Ranger a fool because he's white. That seems racist to me too ( ... )

  • Depp's Ranger--Yes, about equally racist. And you make an interesting point when you bring up Holmes and Watson, since one of things that I liked about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie was that it didn't feel the need to portray all of the other characters as idiots in order to make Holmes look good. Watson had his own positive qualities and could be a legitimate partner, and I don't know why they can't do the same with the Lone Ranger, the Green Hornet, and their partners ( ... )

Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes film is actually the most accurate portrayal of the character as he was in the original stories. Watson was a doctor, and the stories by Doyle were written as Watson's journal entries. He was not a moron. He was also a war hero having been in the army prior to meeting and teaming up with Holmes. So he was doubly capable, intellectually and physically. On top of all of that Watson was a dashing ladies man ( ... )
