What happened was in the 1930s when they made the Basil Raithbone Holmes series of films Nigel Bruce was cast as Watson. Bruce's style was to play well meaning but sweetly foolish and clumsy men. Those movies because so iconic that for generations Raithbone and Bruce's portrayals became synonomis with Holmes and Watson. My reference to The Other and making Spider-Man more like the movies was mostly how they did the elaborate set up just to give him "organic" webshooters as in the movie, and get rid of the mechanical ones he had invented. I gotta say I'm not a big Spider-Man fan or reader, so my knowledge in a lot of this is second hand, so it should be taken with a lot of salt.
