I share your irritation with movies that take a character or story and change it to the point where only the names are the same, and such movies are the rule rather than the exception. Clearly, it isn't the value of the source material that motivates producers to create such films, but my question is, why do you think they do it?

I do think that Ryan Reynolds could make an awesome Deadpool (though possibly a not-very-accurate Hal Jordan), if the material is translated properly.

I think Hollywood cares more about trading on the character brand names. As long as they have a recognizable title it doesn't matter to them how accurate the movie is. Especially when it comes to movies based on comic books. I remember reading something years ago (10-15 years) where it was suggested that movie producers and studios figure comic book audiences would flock to movie theaters whether the movies were right or not.
