I thought that PoA marked a definite improvement which, on the whole, continues with the next ones.
One of my friends was very partial to Snape but I would consider you more 'normal' than her.
I could endeavor to comment on Sirius in later books (I need to see film four) but that might violate the anti-spoilers command.
