Your plan misses two points:

1) The company of riflemen Sharpe and Harper were inspecting. Now I'm not saying that Sharpe couldn't take them if he had to, I'm just pointing out that they'd have to dodge quite a few more bullets.

2) Sharpe is not porn, you can maybe stretch the escape and killing to half an hour but that means you'd have about an hour of screen time dedicated to screwing. Now while I'm not against this per say I suspect the censors would have something to object to.

I now think the biggest obstacle to my plan working was the bit where the powder was bad - oops :)

Nothing wrong with Sharpe porn though ;)
