Gingerbread etc

I have Peter’s head cold. I feel like boiled death: grey and mushy. Unnnnngh. I’ve known for about twenty four hours that it was coming but I was managing to ignore it, through a powerful combination of self-delusion and headmistressyness (‘McKinley! Pull yourself together and do something!’*). This afternoon it knocked me down and sat on my chest ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear that you have succumbed to the cold. In the spirit of recipe sharing that seems to be proliferating on your blog - I have a favourite cold remedy (as probably everyone does, but what the hey, I cannot expound its virtues enough) - you do have to like ginger, preferably a lot of ginger. I came across it in a book called 'The Cooks Garden' by Sheridan Rogers - it's basically hot ginger water (I refer to it as 'the ginger brew' [in capitals]). You boil a kettle, chop up lots of fresh(ish)ginger, then throw the ginger in a thermos with some sultanas (how much of each is up to you - the sultanas act as a bit of a sweetener, and seem to work better than sugar or honey - I usually put in a small handful of the sultanas, and a large handful of chopped ginger). Top with boiling water, and leave to sit. When I have a cold I usually have two brews on the go, one to drink, one maturing - I usually try to let it sit for 24 hours before I drink it. By then, the temperature of the drink is usually only lukewarm, but the ginger ( ... )

BRILLIANT. Thank you, I'll try it. I know about ginger tea, but I've never found it all *that* effective, except for the lifespan of each individual sip, if you follow me. And heat always feels good. But I *don't* know this about letting it mature. And that sounds really interesting. Thanks. (And *I*--lucky me--have an *Aga*. Which keeps a teapot with a cosy on it hot forever. :))

Oh! Oh1 Oh! Fairport Convention! My Beloved, when he was still my beloved and not yet my husband (and he is snoring upstairs in our bed so I am sleeping downstairs in the sitting room) took me to a Fairport Convention concert when we lived in Canterbury and it was wonderful! Yay! Elderly fangirl squee!

Your gingerbread recipe is exactly the same as my mother's, which she learned from her mother in the 1930s. It is utterly delicious and indulgent; and the fact that it is such an old, well-used recipe is marvellous. Thank you for reminding me of it - I shall make it for New Year.

NB: don't bother to screen or to add this comment to LJ comments if it is a pain to do so. You have better things to do!

I didn't know they ever had 3 oz cream cheese packages! I've actually marked up recipes that I thought had /typos/ or printer fading, thinking that it had to mean an 8 oz package!
