WHO: Jade and Dist
WHAT: Dist shows another meaning of Dist the runny while Jade practices his artes.
WHERE: On the beach.
WHEN: At dusk, after the bath, on day 20. I am backlogging like crazy to catch up.
(
It was always better to practice on a moving target. )

And to think! Dist had only just bathed an hour ago and already he would be covered in filth. He could feel his legs beginning to tremble out of fatigue as he stumbled weakly across the sand. Didn't Jade know he wasn't USED to this much physical exertion? "...savage," Dist managed weakly as he reached his destination, panting and heaving, hunched over out of sheer exhaustion.
There were many things which Dist didn't quite seem to grasp. The idea of training being one of them.

"This world is quite different from the one we hail from, as you've no doubt noticed", Jade lectured, "But fonons aren't inexistent, they are, like the world, different. When I first arrived, I felt like they were sand slipping through my fingers, but now, after trying over and over again, I realise they only need to be drawn in differently. Like this."
Jade's right hand came up in front of his face as he started to chant ; the power, at first shaky, bled onto the ground around him in a glowing spiderweb. The field of fonons around him wasn't as even as it had been back in Auldrant, that would take more practice, but it was and that existence was enough for now.
He exhaled slowly, and let the fonons disperse harmlessly around him.

He frowned. "I KNEW there had to be fonons here," his voice was matter-of-fact, as if he were discussing the weather. But I haven't used my fonic artes sans machine in so longHis hand was held shakily forward, as if he were beckoning someone, other hand placed on his narrow hips. Behind his glasses his narrow silver eyes shut tightly and he bit his lip in concentration; half-channeling whatever energy he still had, and half-praying he wouldn't look like an idiot and not have anything to show. A deep breath, almost a ( ... )

Why am I always saddled with incompetents?
He brought a hand up and massaged the bridge of his nose. Summoning fields of fonons in this world always gave him a headache. He found himself contemplating getting rid of Dist once and for all... they were alone here, no one would know... but that wasn't true: Peony would know. And then he would have to cover it up with a lie -like that "accident" on board the Tartarus- but Peony would probably not be duped this time.
So Dist had to live. Too much explaining to do otherwise.
And right now, being useless, he was more work for Jade, and if there was something Jade hated it was extra workThe only logical conclusion, though he was ( ... )

Dist crossed his arms as Jade spoke, trying to act nonplussed as the boulder behind him was reduced to rubble. It was all well and fine for Jade, he thought stiffly. HE'S a fonist. People want him. I wonder if he realizes how hard it is to power a machine with such little fonic activity...though the fact that there are fonons here to begin with is strange.
"I...I can't help but to agree with you on that statement," Dist added, slowly, as if unsure of the waters he was beginning to tread into. "This world is a strange place, but for some reason, not all of it seems that...foreign...to me."
He couldn't believe he was agreeing with Jade, even with Dist's bipolar hero worship, they rarely managed to come to terms on anything. And it had been like that for as long as Dist could remember, even when they were young...it was strange how some things never changed- for the better or the worse.

What a Lorelai-forsaken hellb this world was.
"I know much more than I let on, Dist. And you will know when I need you to know. But I'll tell you this much. You need to get yourself together or you won't be coming with me. I can't look after deadwood in dangerous situations."
Fonons swirled around him, shimmering and green, and Jade sent another wave of wind towards Dist. "It's hard enough just to take care of myself."

Raising his hands in instinctive defense, Dist yelped as a burst of flame fonons exploded from his palms. The flames licked at the wave of wind, exploding in mid-air with an intense heat which Dist's barrier couldn't stand against. He felt his clothing and body grow very hot all of a sudden, his fingers and forearms prickling painfully from the burning sensation.
He stumbled back, panting heavily, his forearms still prickling and stinging, his face still hot and flushed. "B-Be-careful!" He hollered at Jade, though he was sure by now Jade wouldn't bother listening. "I'm at a disadvantage, you know! ( ... )

"How many of your Kaisers have I destroyed, Dist? Nineteen? Is that why you are building number twenty?"
How long had it been, since he felt like this?
Since Rivelata? A month? Since the seal? Two months? Since he last was on a campaign that wasn't simply diplomatic... how long ago was that?
Alive... so alive...
The circle of fonons spread, flattening the dunes around him... Jade's pupils widened until his eyes looked black, without even a rim of crimson.
He laughed.
Suddenly he remembered the last time he had felt so powerful, so exhilarated, so free... Oh no...He tried to stop it, but it was too late. The power burst forth, and the sand tore open to vomit stalagmites of hardened rock, splitting open into huge gaping maws rising from hardening sand... ( ... )

The flying rocks were also found to be surprisingly uncomfortable to dodge. With a yelp, Dist refused to hesitate, and did what he did best- slither his was out of situations like these in cockroach-like efficiency. He dove behind a large enclave of rocks close to their training point, hoping in all senses of the word that the stalagmites wouldn't pierce them.
He shut his eyes tightly with a grimace, and didn't resurface until all had went quiet. Almost too quiet. Stepping out gingerly from behind the rock, Dist trotted over towards Jade's body- what was Peony doing there?! "Jaaaade?" Dist managed, his ( ... )

Just like that day... that day when the schoolhouse went up in flame, as if the blaze had burst forth from every floor, every wall, every piece of furniture at once... that day when Peony, coughing, smoke-stained, and crying, had dragged his friend out to safety.
The smirk had faded off of his features leaving a strangely blank expression, and he was so immobile, if it wasn't for a slight twitch in his right hand, his casting hand, he would have almost looked dead.

Dist had remained conscious and managed to escape by himself. Jade hadn't been so lucky, but at least- as much as he hated to admit it, at least Peony had been there. History seemed to have repeated itself.
"Perhaps we should go back to the inn, Emperor," Dist managed shakily. His reaction was different than he remembered. ( ... )
